Offensive Scheme

We've discussed the D a lot but what do people think of the O now? I mentioned this in another thread but thought it deserved its own topic. When Bohl was first hired, I was concerned his O system would not work here. I definitely need to see it against a defense with a pulse, but, thus far (against some of the worst defenses in CFB), I've seen signs of an Offense that I think can work in Laramie.

I still have concerns along the line, but I do think proper coaching can go a long ways. I think it is obvious that TOP doesn't really help a bad defense that much, so I think that was really overplayed.

However, overall, I'm encouraged thus far by the glimpses the Offense has shown.

This thread is mainly about scheme, future players, etc. The play calling and OC are a separate topic (and not a good one lol).

I am not a fan of it. I prefer a spread style offense, to the more traditional Pro Style. As I have stated before I think it is going to be hard to get the type of players you need to be successful in the Pro. It also highlights our weak defense in a sense that we cannot outscore teams. If you have a prolific offense you can get away with a mediocre defense. It is really just a formula where you have to score more points than your opponent how you do it is really irrelevant.

I'm in full support of Bohl, but I do see your point as well. I've often wondered what would have happened if we hired Stitt. Maybe one of the best spread offensive minds in the country. We were already built for it.

I definitely have or had similar concerns as you, but they are slowly alleviating. Of course, we haven't played a defense yet, so reserve the right to change my mind :D

We are seeing flashes of it. And Coffman (when not mulling over an INT) shows what can happen when you have a solid QB leading it. We also have Hill in the backfield. Wick, on the carries that he isn't instantly dropped behind the line, doesn't have the same "oomph" that he's had before. Not sure why. The o-line is actually quite young right now (2 freshmen, 2 sophomores, and a junior as starters), but they do show some signs.

As for the OC and his playcalling, like you said, that's another thread. But overall, it can work.

My personal opinion is that it will be easier to recruit pro-style players to Laramie than it will the spread.

As fewer teams run pro style, the higher chance we have of getting a better player. Look at Hill and Overtstreet as examples. Barely recruited, and Hill has a chance to be the best Wyoming back of all time.

As more teams move to spread, the more spread out the talented recruits are. Which means you better strike gold on the ones you get.

I also like the scheme. We seem to have an easier time recruiting quality 0-Lineman in this scheme. We don't show urgency at times, but I don't think the scheme has anything to do with that. I like being run orientated, but I think this insistence on running certain plays when they''re not working because it's "our identity" is idiotic, but that is also not the scheme's fault. The west coast offense is timeless, and is still the foundation of most NFL offenses. I love QB's in this sytem, your WRs actually run routes, and TEs have a big role.

I think the system will work if given time.

Note: I read that Bohl is looking for WRs to step up and that walk-on Tayton Montgomery will get a look. What happened to Murphy, Doddles and Johnson - all scholarship players?!

Johnson is redshirting. Murphy has been in on jet sweeps and hasn't done much, Doddles has been on special teams but hasn't done much. We really need SOMEBODY, ANYBODY, to step up.

They are all terrible! Cant catch and are slow. This is what I am referring to in general. These are the kids Bohl recruited and they are horrible!

I don't know how much of an exaggeration you just told, but I hope you are wrong.

If they can't catch, put them in the defensive secondary... then again, I think Odell beckham jr. might have a hard time catching throws from Nick smith and co. lol

Great point...second team WRs work with the second team QB. That might be part of the problem.

Ok, it is somewhat of an exaggeration! :-) But they need a lot of work.

That's a little rough considering two of these guys were 3 star recruits. I know the one from Nebraska is RS
We've also had Parker and Price both play. Harshman even got a garbage td pass.
We seem to be getting in on some big RBs. Like I said, I am very impressed with Overstreets size. Tapscott was a good get and so was Nico Evans is RSing.
What I've been most impressed with is exactly what you need for a West Coast Prostyle Offense to function and that is big linemen. Just by watching these young guys earning the starting spots and opening holes for Hill and giving time for Coffman I'd say we do not struggle with getting size or strength. Especially with what I've seen Commit so far this year.
I'm not huge fan of pro style, but it has always worked and has never been a system to fade out.
I think Bohl can do it.

I did like our spread too. What can I say, I OC for a reason. But you will never take the Pistol out of me EVER!

I've no problem with the offensive scheme and I believe it will be purring on all 8 cylinders in the next few years...the defensive scheme is the one I am not sold on.

Any offensive scheme is only as good as the players running it (Paraphrased from from Genghis Kahn)
I don't think that's paraphrased...I think that's word for word.

Offensive scheme is fine as long as you're not so bull headed to get away from, "we must establish the run first" mentality. We should come out guns blazing in this next game until they're softened up. If you're doing better passing, pass. If you're running well, run.

I too like the offensive scheme. It has shown glimmers of success here and there, but the play calling needs to change. Adjustments and being flexible will win games, "establishing an identity" makes you predictable.

If Vigen can work through some of the adjustments a little quicker we may find some success before the 4th quarter.
