Offensive play design

Watching this game really has me question both sides of the ball for us. Is our defensive scheme really this bad that we allow wide open receivers play after play or if our offensive play book so limited that we don't have plays that give Coffman easy quick looks to wide open receivers? It just blows my mind that week after week it looks like this.

I'll second your emotion...I don't get it. The problem defensively has much to do with the system IMO. It's a read & react, soft cover, Tampa 2 system, and it gives away some of the field, conceding yardage in the name of keeping everything in front. We never blitz, we line up in almost the same exact formation on defense each week, which leads me to conclude we can't be too difficult to game plan against...it's as frustrating as hell.

Offensively as well, I'm a big fan of running the ball and pounding the other team's defense, but I am alarmed at the lack of what I'll call 'creativity.' I'm not requesting a helter-skelter sort of an offense, but I am hopeful that we may put our best players in a position to succeed as often as possible. Brian Hill running up the middle time after time, even with no daylight, it's perplexing. We are dealing with an upgrade at the QB position from a year ago, but in all candor, Coffman is limited in what he can do. He has awful pocket awareness, he gets happy feet, his decisions are often times very questionable, and although he played well against Nevada in the win last week, I feel the bulk of his stats comes from playing from behind all the time and amassing yardage in garbage time. As you note, however, the lack of open receivers, the lack of any bubble screens, quick hits to get the ball moving downfield...all of this is part of the mounting movement to have Bohl taking a look at the OC position after this year.
