Offense in 2026....

With a future NFL MVP under center (although he missed 2.5 games), a competent and creative offensive mind could average more than 285 yards per game with Chadron State's OL and WRs.
The only legit excuse for some of 2017 was that the design surrounding use of the rush with a powerful RB was thwarted by injury.

What was really exposed was that Bohl had no intention of using the pass anymore than necessary.

The Wyoming fan base was so hungry for wins that hovering around .500 fed the starvation in a way that never caused much protest with the designed offensive limitations of the head coach. Every season the defense is closer to mediocre than strong the team becomes hugely exposed to failure when unable to score points.

Isn’t the winner of the game of football the one with the most points on the scoreboard when the clock says 00:00? Why did we fans tolerate the intentional refusal to pursue a more effective pursuit of scoring points?

Beat crappy teams. Lose to good teams. Split with average teams. That’s the recipe for a 61-60 record which was the best run since the 90’s.

This analysis is very misleading IMO without further evaluation.

In 2017, Wyoming was #1 in the entire nation forcing 38 turnovers that resulted in a lot of short fields and a couple blowouts where it was run up the middle the entire 2nd half. In addition, Josh Allen missed 3 games to injury.
That’s exactly it - when the defense was really strong the program had a better chance at 7+ wins. When the defense had some struggles the offense was no help.

Though that D was stout Wyoming ppg dropped from 35 per game to 23.

Outside Gardner-Webb and UNM (only game where there were a lot of short fields) the O was bad and I mean REALLY bad:

Remember at Iowa they had like 5 turnovers but only scored 3 points

Texas State 42-10: 1 KO for a TD, 1 Fumble Return for a TD (Logan Wilson)

USU game had a pick 6 AND a safety to account for the 28 points

Hawaii game was saved because of a Tyler Hall KO return

Even with Josh missing two games the O looked the same and the points were bloated but Special Teams and D points

2017 was bad because Mike Bath was the RB coach and tried to put Trey Woods in a RB and that was a disaster and then the next year he is gone, Gordie is the RB coach and Nico Evans explodes on scene

Bohl was stuck in D wins Championships, and he is right to a point. Every team that won the MW form 2014-2024 averaged over 30 PPG (outside 2020 SJSU at 28ppg). Those same teams gave up around 20ppg though last year Boise D was bad at 28ppg they averaged 37ppg to make up for it.

Bohl's team HAD to be perfect every game because they had no margins otherwise. We got to experience a great 0 in 2016 and a great D in 2017 but once the O recruits left and those early gems in recruiting left on D Wyoming never recovered and it's evident recruits took notice especially on O.

I remember Trey woods. He sucked so bad

I would just add that our PPG should have been higher if that was the case. but bohl did love handing it off 3 times and kicking a FG. I'm sure that was an epic FG year

It appears that Cooper Rothe converted 15 of 18 field goals that year for 7th most in program history. Hoyland has Wyoming’s record with 22 in 2022.
