I do not sit here saying that we will be right there for the conference crown out of blind youth optimism, I do it out of watching what we are up against and how good of a team we are. I predicted at the start of the year that we would go 8-4 and I stand by that prediction. The reason for such optimism is we are playing in the worst conference in college football this season, everyone sucks. Fresno is a joke this season, and if you stop their offense twice you win the game, Boise is not that good on both sides of the ball, and USU is vastly overrated. The conference is HORRIBLE, and the Pokes are a decent team that is right there with the top four. I am coming from a position where I have not been a Pokes fan until about 2010 and look at it more from what I see than blind homerism. This board is frustrating this year because we win one game and everyone acts like we are going to the BCS bowl games and we lose one and now everyone thinks we are lucky to win 3 more games in a shit conference with one of the best offenses in the nation. We lost to a Texas State team, that I thought would be a problem from the get go, and frankly they will probably run the table the rest of the way and finish 11-1 (have you seen that schedule). I will stick with my prediction of before the season and I guarantee that we finish 8-4 or better, and if not I will come back and eat lots of crow. But the fact of the matter is we don't play anyone that is very good, and that includes all of the top teams in the conference, if we play a good game we beat anyone in this conference, that is why we say stop overreacting to a loss to a decent enough team in a road game with a 3 and a half hour lightning delay. That might very well be the best team we play all season, and it is most certainly the best defense. We will be fine and we will win at least 8 games.WyoAlum1987 said:Beaver, Kansas and others.
There is no call for bad manners. Everyone on this board cares about UW, and we can disagree without being disagreeable. Not everyone shares your youthful optimism, or my aged cynicism. Differing opinions are the spice of life.
The Pokes' wins over Northern Colorado, Idaho and USAFA cause us to reach differing conclusions. You see them as foundational to playing for the MWC division crown. Good on you.
I see them as no more than an indication that we are better than one of the worst teams in the FCS and one of the worst teams in FBS.
Last week we lost to a team that has been in existence two years. You see that as nothing more than a temporary letdown. OK. I think that if TxState can dominate our program after two years in the business, and DC has been paid nearly 10 million over 5 years to lead the Cowboys, and Burman has handled 10 times that amount in that time-this loss reinforces my opinion that our program lacks leadership . (other examples of turnarounds due to god leadership that are a bit closer to home include Boise and USU)
In my opinion, we had spotty showings against UNC and Idaho-got off to a slow start and didnt have a complete game in either one, but I was encouraged by the USAFA win. The hallmark of a program on the rise is that they take it one game at a time, get a little better each game, and climb into respectability. Smith looked like a world beater in that game, and the defense and offensive line were improved...In your opinion, that game was validation that Wyoming would contend for the MWC championship. OK, we disagree, no problem...
I think it would be prudent to avoid making claims about rolling the next opponent, destroying the rest of the mountain division and openly worry about the coach jilting UW after one win over a piss poor conference opponent. You don't. Thats OK, we differ.
Bottom line of this post: If you want to pump sunshine about this coach and this team, if you want to drive the bandwagon, have fun. If I want to be a doubting Thomas and sceptic, if I think DC and Burman are pisspoor leaders and need to be replaced thats OK too.
Just dont drive your bandwagon over UW supporters that wont jump on..or call us ridiculous. I'm sure you wouldnt want to be called ridiculous if it turns out we actually DO go 6-6.
I have to admit its fun reading your posts. For me its like listening to a 4 year old tell me about Santa Claus. I wish I could believe the pokes will contend for the MWC championship and that DC is the second coming of Roach.. I really do.... but I just cant.
So please dont come on here and be diagreeable. Doesnt suit you Beaver.
McPeachy, Wyovanian, Doc and I have been around for a while. We are entitled to our opinion-as you are yours...and in my opinion, I've seen great Cowboy football coachers and great cowboy teams, and this aint lookin like anything I remember as being in that category.
Texas State, with all due respect to them, are not even the best team we have played this year (that would be Nebraska). They are obviously better than UW (proved it on the field), but their results as a whole are not very good. They barely beat an awful USM team (one that lost 60-7 to Boise and 56-13 to Nebraska) and got handled by Texas Tech (a good team, but unproven at this point). I do think their defense is about as good as we will see all year, but their offense is not even close to a Nebraska, Boise, Fresno, or USU. The fact that we gave up 42 points is a giant red flag.
Teams don't play the same every game obviously and I thought the Pokes played much better, more focused, etc. against Nebraska than against TxSt. That kind of lackluster effort indicates the ability to lose to teams that might be considered weaker (UNM, CSU), particularly when those teams can do the one thing that we cannot stop (run the ball). Smith and the offense will play better in upcoming games, I agree with you there. I see zero reason for optimism on the other side of the ball.
