Sawvel has to understand this is the most important game in his head coaching career. If he loses this game is toast. I would hope Burman feels the same since he set this up. This is for the Boot, as always. But this time it is soooo much more. It is about dignity and making a statement against the traitors.
Yeah, I don't think Sawvel sees it that way. He's already telling the guys not to let the outcome of this game dictate the rest of the season.
He's hoping he can pull out 6-7 wins against the crappiest schedule Wyoming has faced in the last four decades and convince everyone that is enough "progress" to keep his job. At Wyoming, it just might work.

This. If Wyoming loses this game - the season is defined no matter what Sawful tells himself or his players. This is a MUST WIN and we'd better act like it. All the chips are already in the middle of the table, Jay. If we don't win - and I don't think we will - Burman and Saw should resign immediately. The season will be a total loss and there is no sense in pretending like it isn't. If we win - and only if we win - should Saw and Tom get to try to cobble together a 2026 run. Even then, if the rest of the season is the steaming pile I fear it might be, the Bobbsey twins should kick rocks.
I think Tom is hoping it works. Methinks that the new Prez might not see it that way.

If CSU embarrasses WYO on the first game of the season, we're not going to be attending our normal two games in Laramie this year. Likely won't even be one game.
Ticket prices are not aligned with the program performance, and food, travel, and hotel for four people is just too much to watch the Pokes struggle against poor teams.

As much as a loss would be catastrophic for the program, a win could really be something to build on. To go into Fort Collins and shut up what will surely be an amped up CSU fanbase would be a damn nice way to set the tone for the remainder of the season.
I worry losing has become somewhat of a mentality in the program over these past two seasons. I'm not sure this coaching staff really believes in themselves or their players to get the job done on the field. That kind of thing can be a program destroyer.
The time for excuses are over. I don't care what injuries we carry into this game. I don't care if the refs make a bunch of horseshit calls against us. Just win the damn game. Sawvel's coaching career is literally on the line.
It should be. With the current level of expectations in the athletic department, I fear that even 4 wins would be enough for Tom to keep JayJay. I wholeheartedly agree with your post though.

Whether Sawvel goes 12-0 this year or 0-12, he collects 1.1 million this year, 1.25 million next year and 1.25 million in 2028. There is no escaping that ridiculous contract Burman handed to him. The only question is does he get $1.25 million each year to sit on the couch or does he have to show up to work and make some unintelligible comments to the media about the other team having asses as an excuse to the performance.
With contracts like that, there are zero expectations and that is reflected in the performance. Sawvel is set for life based on piss poor performance to-date and can laugh all the way to the bank.

I believe 1 win may be enough. The program could be filled with so much apathy that there is no financial way to pay Sawvel his contract not to coach and to bring in a new staff. You can't bleed a turnip. Donors have grown tired.
I mean, is anyone on here ponying up any money to cover the contract Burman gave to Sawvel so that we can afford a new staff?

I think more general attendance, more season ticket holders, and bigger donor contributions can offset some of the cost to jettison Sawful and Co., after this season. Hopefully, TB will retire and a better AD will be hired. Wishful thinking maybe but the General seems to take athletics seriously. I am hoping and praying for major changes after this season.
I suppose if Sawvel is OK with taking a couple years off and then finishing out his career as a position coach somewhere, then you are right. But if he wants to have a chance at being a DC or HC again, then he needs to turn things around significantly this year.
I'm assuming the guy takes some pride in his career and would prefer to be successful vs. getting fired and paid to sit at home. In my opinion, this is his last shot. I hope he succeeds.
Donors have grown tired. UW has either squeezed them to the point that they won't give (McMurry, Rochelle, etc.), irritated them to the point they won't give (me and others like me), or ignored them (most small donors that may grow into a large donor) and they don't have interest in giving.
My wife and I have shifted our ~$10k from UW to other charities and LCCC. I hear from LCCC athletics all the time. I hear from the LCCC foundation all the time. The campus is growing. There is a clear strategy for growth and improvement OUTSIDE OF BUILDING FACILITIES. In short, LCCC is investment-worthy. I hope the new Prez can turn things around. He has a mountain ahead of him.
