Northern Iowa Game

I’m not sure about the defensive holding couldn’t see it on replay. Our guy did come free so I suspect it was an ok call
I get that if you hold before the ball is thrown it’s holding instead of PI becasue the ball isn’t in the air. But, how in the hell if it’s a running play. When I officiated high school ball a defensive lineman could grab and throw down a blocker and it wasn’t holding.

This is the definition and applies for a passing play. It was a run play.

The 'Safe Zone'

Defensive holding cannot be called within five yards of the line of scrimmage.

This "safe zone" allows defenders to make contact with offensive players.

Any infraction outside of this zone, however, results in a penalty.

Defensive holding typically occurs when defenders try to keep up with a receiver running downfield.

As they try to prevent wide open passes, defenders sometimes end up holding onto a receiver's jersey, arms, or shoulders.
