Northern Illinois to join MWC

That would be great. Would illuminate what a joke their leaving of the MWC really is when you consider all the money they are spending.

Especially when a simple merger coulda saved a lot of $$$ and headaches for everyone involved. A trained monkey could figure it out!!!!!

The PAC 2 clearly believed they would win their lawsuit against the MWC when they invited the four MWC schools, and didn't go for a full merger. I can't handicap their chances, but I will be really happy if they lose it. It would be very interesting to see what clauses are in the agreements that brought in GC, UCD and NIU - do they allow the MWC to say "Sorry, not sorry" if the PAC 2 agrees to merge in order to avoid losing that suit.

We should have focused more on Olympic sports in conference expansion, imo.

At our level, I don't think football will be a big driver like it has been in the past. That said, I'm guessing it will be like fcs and I honestly don't know the financials or importance of football to MOST (not just ndsu) fcs schools.

However, we are at 7200 feet which provides a unique and beneficial training environment for a lot of Olympic sports. With the right focus (easier to compete with NIL for these), UW could become a destination spot for these. Opinion and guess only. I haven't followed those sports closely enough to provide a very knowledgeable so I won't argue if that's the dumbest thought ever.

I get the argument that football makes money but with all the state and student investment counting as revenue, I'm not sold.

There will be no result which ends up in a merger I can tell you that much. The divorce is playing out, the subsequent moves have eliminated reconciliation as a viable option.

This would be like husband and wife splitting up, wife having a baby with a new guy and then trying to reconcile with the ex-husband. Not happening.

Or Wyoming scheduling BYU on the regular. Eventually the money wims out, doesn't it.

I believe this to be relatively accurate with the caveat that (other than maybe UNLV), I see all of the 2026 MWC teams largely in the same boat. Once the top 40-50 programs break off, I actually foresee the top of the FCS and the remaining FBS to basically merge into the same division.
I agree (mostly), the hard part is what about Boise? Or Memphis? Or SDSU? There are some schools with sizeable collectives and excellent facilities that aren't in the P4. SMU sort of proved you could come out of nowhere and be very competitive immediately with the right factors in place. Arizona State sort of did the same thing.

Unfortunately- money does win out. You realize that Wyoming just played a ‘home’ basketball game against BYU in Salt Lake!?!? I am doubtful we ever see them return to Laramie on a football field (and likely not basketball either). BYU has the Big 12 money and doesn’t need us.

SMU is in a class of their own. They have some of the wealthiest billionaires in the country completely supporting their program. None of those other schools you list has that (Memphis has a FedEx deal but still peanuts to what SMU has).

I always wondered why a Jackson billionaire took a liking to the Cowboys and 'adopted' the program...

I’m not sure if you’re referencing the now deceased Foster Friess. His donations around the state appeared to be squarely aimed at buying the opportunity to be Governor.

I am doubtful Wyoming athletics will ever even see another Mick McMurry or Maury Brown when it comes to sheer dollars donated to Wyoming athletics.

SMU’s billionaires are in a completely separate class when it comes to paying for their success.

I have never heard of Mr. Freiss.

This was purely wishful thinking, although I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility.

A Riverside billionaire donated land a few years ago - but I don't know if he ever took an interest in athletics.

In his later life, Foster Friess ‘relocated’ to Jackson Wyoming. From around 2016-2018, during the lead up to his run for Governor, he started pouring a ton of money into various causes around the State of Wyoming (including the University). He ended up second in the ballotting for the Republican nomination in 2018 behind Gordon and ahead of Hageman. He then lobbied hard to change Wyoming’s election format for a ‘runoff’ between the top 2 candidates claiming that was the only way someone with his ‘conservative’ values could win. Shortly thereafter, he ran into health problems, pretty much left the state and passed away a few short years later.

In my brief time meeting him, he seemed very impressed with himself. But that is just my anecdotal experience and maybe others had a different experience.

Note - I only had pleasant experiences with my brief interactions with the McMurrys and Maury Brown over the years. All down to Earth.

Just saw on twitter Texas State to the pac-whatever is a very real possibility. LMAO
It will be Texas State most likely. PAC may try to entice North Texas and UTSA as well now that Memphis appears to be a longshot.

Texas State is the big winner of this nonsense precipitated by Oregon State and Washington State. Texas State played its cards right and happens to be in a good location and a current conference with relatively low exit fees.

It’s all ridiculous nonsense
