As fall camp nears a close, UND coach Bubba Schweigert has determined his young quarterback hasn’t been dethroned by a pair of experienced veterans.
UND released its depth chart on Monday and named true sophomore Keaton Studsrud as the starting quarterback for the team’s Sept. 5 opener at Wyoming.
Studsrud, who led the depth chart in spring drills, held off juniors Ryan Bartels and Joe Mollberg, who are on the Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, on the Wyoming depth chart.
Bartels and Mollberg have started off and on since 2013 before injuries led the way to UND pulling the redshirt last season on Studsrud, who went 2-2 over the final four games including a win over No. 22 Northern Arizona.
“Keaton had a good spring but we also needed to challenge him to be better and we think he’s done that,” Schweigert said. “We like Keaton’s ability to move and throw on the run. On the other hand, he can sit in the pocket and throw. Young guys sometimes are in a hurry to get out of the pocket, but he’s shown the ability to be patient.”
