No Defensive Coordinators

I realize that our problems have hinged on defense. However I think it would be a mistake to hire a former DC. Generally speaking Defensive minded people are NOT offensive minded. They tend to play field position, conservative football. In my opinion that is "playing not to lose" which is different than "playing to win!" I know most of you defensive guys will say that he would hire an OC that would call the plays but from my experience a head coach that is a DC will not support a wide open offensive concept. They want three yards every play. They are more concerned about shortening the game, field position, and ball security therefore they sacrifice the explosive elements of the offense. Phillip Montgomery is the dude we want. He is the OC for the most prolific offense in the country right now at Baylor. I know I know....we have already been down that road with Christensen, but the difference is that Montgomery is not arogant and thinks that he knows it all like DC was. He will get the Best DC possible! PLus it will re-open the Texas/Oklahoma recruiting pool.

I respectfully disagree Slow Hand.

The Texas and Oklahoma players don't like it here in the cold and snow. They rarely pan out.

We need someone like Tedford who has coached for a while, and has had extended success.

Let me repeat....NO DEFENSIVE COORDINATORS! I am telling all of Wyoming.....you will be so sorry. It is a boring brand of football! If you like watching paint dry then great, but I am a fast break on grass kind of guy. There is no reason you cant play uptempo and still have a defense that is prolific. Keep the defensive minded guys out of the head spot!

After reading his bio I am ok with Tedford. Blue collar kind of a guy who worked his way through the ranks....plus he was a college QB who set all kinds of Passing records! I guess I could look pass the fact that he worked at Fresno for a while. LOL

Fresno's coach Tim Deruyter is a defensive minded coach. I don't think you would call their offense conservative. Im not advocating a D coach but I wouldn't eliminate anyone.

So you had to yell NO DEFENSIVE COORDINATORS at me when Tedford has been an offensive coach or head coach is whole career?

I'm glad you read up on him though.
He has had so much success with QBs, Smith and Thompson would be awesome under him.

I am just being a bit of an ass because I am really biased on this one. Not trying to piss anyone off! Fresno is well....Fresno so there are always exceptions to the rule. But lets not take a chance.

Well that's a good coach playing to the strength of his team with is his QB in Carr. We'll see what happens post-carr, he may have more to do with Fresno's recent success than you think, I wouldn't count them as a major up and coming program just yet. I'd call it the Kellen Moore affect.

All of Utah's head coaches are defensive guys and all have been successful. Whittingham, Mendenhall and Andersen (now Wells who is offensive guy).

i think a lot of it just comes down to players still. Coaches cant make Claiborn catch a dam punt. Or stop a late hit or Huff roughing the kicker. Over...and over...and over again.

Bias or not, Fresno is a hell of a lot better than us, and I would love to have their resume over the past 15 years.

Bingo.

Show me the coach who can bring in the best recruits and I'll show you the coach who will have the most success at UW.

I know what your saying - but I hope what we really do is try to pay our coordinators/position coaches towards the top of the conference with the new hire. There are successful defensive coordinators out there - Kyle Wittinham, Bronco Mendenhall, Gary Patterson, etc.
