Next year's starting 5

I keep going back to this question. And not only the starting five, but the entire depth chart.

Here's where I'm at right now. It's a bit unconventional, but it gets the guys on the court who should be playing

Washington / Conway / Kelley (RS)
Adams / Lieberman / Aka Gorski / Averbuck (RS)
James / Marshall / McManamen
Herndon / Dalton / Moemeka
Barnes / Naughton

There will probably be times we go even smaller, with James at PF, to get everybody minutes.

I agree with a lot of this , especially with the way Shyatt is talking. There are 4 guys that I can pretty much say are starting at this point unless some unexplained thing happens.

Washington, Adams, James and Herndon will all start. Who the 5th person will be who knows as of yet? It depends on how big or small Shyatt decides to go and that might change based on who we are playing. Like NowherePoke said up above we shouldn't get hung up on certain positions . I don't really think James is going to be playing what you would call a traditional power forward spot for instance and you could have Adams bringing the ball up the court but he isn't going to be the pg . It will be like a small ball type of deal with 4 guards and one big man which could either be Herndon , Barnes or Naughton. We could really stretch defenses if Herndon is at the 5 spot and he is knocking down 3's.

Only thing I would change up on that list is I don't think Aka Gorski will be that far back on the depth chart. He is supposed to be the best shooter on the team plus he has good size for a guard . But like you who knows how Shyatt will divide up playing time. I think Conway may take a little longer than a lot of people think to be completely ready at the pg spot so he may not get as much playing time starting off as some here thought he would. Will be interesting to see.

This may be the way Aka Gorski (or someone else) gets more time. In this case, Lieberman would slide to the PG and Marshall and AG would be the 2nd team wings.
 
I don't think there's any scenario that gets McManamen buried on the depth chart. He's put in his dues, made some big shots, played solid D, and generally been a great team player. If he doesn't start he'll certainly be the 6th man.
 
I agree. I think Mcman wil start. He has enough experience and has shown flashes to be a good player. I am also not ready to pencil in James as a starter. He will play a big part but I don't think he will start. At least at the beginning of the season. I have 2 different lineups depending on the developement of the bigs.

Anyway, we will end up playing more people than years past and I imagine people will shift around to different positions. I see us being a smaller lineup this year playing more 4 out 1 in offense.
 
I think it will depend up on the match up on who starts.

I agree that Mac won't be buried on the depth chart at all.

I think Justin James will be starting. If Mac starts also then it will be Adams, Washington, Mac, James and Herndon. James will be starting before Barnes or Naughton or Moemeka in most scenarios . He is too good to keep on the bench. So we will probably go with a small ball type of team in most cases.

I should have clarified myself on this. When I said James could play PF, I wasn't meaning in the traditional sense. But remember, Shyatt is perimeter heavy in the offensive scheme (lots of complaints of too few post touches for Nance last year) so whoever plays "PF" will need to be capable out there.

A lot of what position you play depends on what position you can defend. That will be the key for whoever lines up there.
 
Jason had some of the most iconic moments in last years run, but he isn't going to be the starter at the end of the year. I can see him starting early on just so Shyatt can show some of the younger guys what he expects defensively, but he is better suited coming of the bench. Coming off the bench allows him to maximize his skill set, play hard while he is in (one of his best skills), and hide some of his deficiencies.

I'm not even sure he should start early, unless we decide to go small. Even so, I'd put Morris Marshall's chances to start at least on par with JMac's.
 
I just love that we're in a position to have this discussion!! I'm sick of seeing 3 or more guys playing 35+ minutes and only having 7 guys see the floor. I truly hope we'll be as deep as we think we are this year. Its crazy to be having this discussion after losing 5 seniors.
 
The interesting thing will be who redshirts. Shyatt leaves the decision up to the players, so I hope some of them look at the situation and sit out to better balance classes and the depth chart. Tough thing though is everyone likes to think they are good enough to get playing time.

I agree 110%. I think he is going to be forced to play more guys this year than he has in the past. And I also think the rotation will never be set. 2nd half minutes will be dependent on how well you play in the first half.
 
just hope Josh tears it up this year and is considered POY in MWC, just hope he doesn't try too much and....gulp any sort of injury hampers him, but I'm ready to watch him explode this year
