With the smaller splits and increased focus on strength and conditioning we'll be in much better shape than most here think. I don't think we're going to be world beaters. In fact, I'm not sure we'll even reach .500 this season. However, this team will be better and more consistent than most are giving them credit for. It's certainly not going to be sunshine and rainbows, but it won't be doom and gloom either.BJC said:O-line that was recruited for a completely different blocking scheme and to be honest...wasn't good at that. Hoping it was coaching but I understand how folks would be concerned.
I agree with your analysis, "It's certainly not going to be sunshine and rainbows, but it won't be doom and gloom either." Another thing that we have to keep in mind we really haven't seen the OL and what it can do under Bohl and Fuchs. At the Spring game we had two OT's that were out due to injury, couple this with the way the OL was split up and it was impossible to judge the OL. I have no doubt that we will be a much more hard nosed and physical team and fundamentally sounder next season. With this said, if we don't have a passing game all the other teams defenses has to do is put 9 in the box and we will struggle. I would not be surprised to see the opposing defenses jam the line and put 9 in the box until Wyoming proves that it is costly to do that.
The flip side of this, is that I feel our defense has the chance to be one of the better ones in the conference as long as we can stay healthy. Depth will be a key feature and considering how Bohl likes to practice, i.e. - double scrimmaging at the same time just might build more than we have seen in a while.
You got me thinking with the 9 in the box statement.
Yeah we are very depleted at QB, and people will be able to focus in on our running game leaving 2 corners to cover Rufran and Gentry.
DC recruited some awesome WRs, and that might be what saves our running game this season.
I don't think teams can put 9 in the box against us with the WRs we have. Rufran and Gentry are men among boys, and we are have some more talented WRs as well. 8 in the box sure, but 9?
I think most teams can handle our WR's one on one. We don't have a QB that can get the ball to them. Add the pressure we will see and we will not be able to run any deep routes. I don't think Gentry will start though. My impression is that the coaching staff don't like him, they don't think he works hard enough in practice. Dom will be in the slot and look for Jake and Jalen or Keenan to be at the other wide out. Gentry will come off of the bench.
Gentry is a stud. We all forget he was only a true freshman last year. If he work on getting off the press and block a little better he will be one of our best WR threats. I like Maulhardt but he gets manhandled by good cover corners. Burns shut him down in the spring game. Gentry has some of the best hands I've seen in a college receiver.
Oh I agree with you! Don't get me wrong I think he is the one WR that has legit NFL chances! He will be fine. As he matures and the coaching staff get to see him in action they will realize he is a stud!
