This should help the tennis program out considerably.. good to see Wyoming stepping up to the plate w/ facilities.. reflects well on the University.

The University of Wyoming announced on Monday that construction will begin in mid-July on UW's new Indoor Tennis Facility. A ground-breaking ceremony will be held on Wednesday, June 30 at 10 a.m. at the site of the new Indoor Tennis Facility. It will be located adjacent to the existing indoor courts at the UW Tennis Facility on the east side of the UW campus north of Willett Drive.

Hmmm.

This will probably offend some on this board, and it is a pretty sourassed thing to say...but what a waste of funds, IMO. In fact, it is teams like Women's Tennis, Women's Golf, Women's Volleyball, and Women's Soccer, that piss me off because they cost UW a D1 men's baseball program. A baseball program that was competitive, regardless the "weather" and all the other bullshit lame ass excuses. 14 short years ago...UW and Title IX killed a once proud and competitive program. Damn.

The tennis team is coming off the best year in cowgirl history. I know they aren't a big money deal like football and basketball but they are a wyo sport. 99% of you all most likely were not cowgirl basketball fans either until joe came along and hanna came to play for him. I understand not having baseball sucks but if the team wears the brown and gold I don't care what sport they play I'm gonna root for them!! Go pokes!!

You quite possibly are a better fan than I then. I just can't get pumped up for revenue draining sports, like what we have mentioned. Do I want the to "win" or whatever, sure, anytime UW wins anything it is good. But I have never attended a UW tennis match, UW golf match, etc., and don't get me started on soccer...the gheyest "sport" (more like activity) ever.

The golf team (etc) spends countless hours doing keg stands and dropping bing cherries from their asses into shot glasses on Saturday nights...all the while draining funds from areas in greater need. Build a top 10 football program, and ticket sales / revenue from that will pay for all this other boring nonsense.

Not trying to pick a fight on this one just was friends with more then one that played on the tennis and golf teams when I attened uw. I knew football and basketball players too. Just saying they are all there to support the university. Some might not bring in mad funds like football, but they still wanna go out there and bust there ass to make us look good . I support all teams and by no way am I saying one person is a bigger fan then the next.

I have to disagree with the naysayers on this one. I've been told that UW grades fairly low on some kind of Title IX grading scale that somehow has to do with a comparison of men vs. women sports, scholarships, facilities, etc. The tennis facility will help improve that grade which reflects well on UW. Another point, I was as big a baseball fan as anyone when I was at UW, however, if we were to bring back a sport to UW, I think it should be the ski team. Afterall, how many national championships did the baseball team win?

I hear ya, I am not trying to pick a fight either. Damn this offseason has been a rough one.

Why not both? Agreed on the Alpine teams, completely, they were always contenders for national championships. I also loved the influx of athletes from Norway, and enjoyed their olympics on many occasions.

But back to baseball...UW competed for conference championships on a regular basis, in fact I think the final year, 1996, they won the conference. In today's landscape with college baseball, they could easily end up where TCU, Utah, and NM have been lately.

Can you imagine the ball flying off of the bat at 7200 feet. WOOOOSHH!! haha.. they'd have to model themselves after the Rockies when going recruiting.. sinkerballers and guys that can hit a mile. The ultimate home field advantage.

I miss baseball at UW too. We had some good players come out of UW - Greg Brock, Jeff Huson (who you hear on the Rockies broadcast, and Art Howe (he played and then managed a couple of major league teams). We almost need a retractable domed stadium here though.

Art Howe was a cowboy former manager for the Mets and A's. I agree those are two sports we must have back. I believe we did make it very far in baseball one year maybe in the 50's or 60's maybe even the championship game(s) someone else might know?

Actually Wyoming went 36-20 (15-15 in WAC play) in it's final year of baseball. The Pokes were 6 games behind the WAC West Division champ, BYU.

Wyoming only won two divisional titles and that was in 1966 and in 1986. The conference best-of-3 playoff that year was held in Laramie. We lost both games against Arizona, 10-2 and 4-0. In 1986, We went 1-2 in the WAC tourny held in San Diego.

The last Wyoming even played in the WAC Tournament was in 1991 in Honolulu. Wyoming went 0-2 in the double-elimation tournament losing to both Hawaii and San Diego State.

All info is STRAIGHT from my OFIICIAL 1997 WAC Baseball media guide. Sorry, Peachy, but your facts are wrong.

Wyoming did play in the CWS once....in 1956.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1956_College_World_Series

We came into the CWS with a 17-3 record that season. Wyoming went 1-2 in the tournament.

We lost to Minnesota, 4-0, Game 2. Then, beat New York University (the Violets, no joke), 8-2 in Game 5. But got eliminated by Bradley, 12-8, in Game 9. Minnesota went on to win the CWS that year btw.

*blinks* :orly:

If anyone needs any historical information about our time in the WAC up to 1997, I'm your man.

I've collected official WAC media guides for the time period of 1996-97 for...

football
women's soccer
women's basketball
men's basketball
baseball
volleyball

They were more like guesses, or thoughts...not facts.

Except, maybe, the fact that UW was competitive. And baseball generated revenue. And there is some great history from that program.

Who was it that hit one of (if not the) longest HR's at Cowboy Field?

The answer to the homerun question is Reggie Jackson. However, I have also heard a rumor that that fact was made up by a Sports Information Office student assistant to add a bit of lore to the Wyoming baseball program.
