Missoulian article on Coach Glenn and selecting a new offensive coordinator:

Burman: new offensive coach is Glenn's decision

LARAMIE, Wyo. - Wyoming athletic director Tom Burman said head coach Joe Glenn fired offensive coordinator Bill Cockhill without any prodding.

"We had talked about where the program is, where it's going and what it's going to take to get us there," Burman said. "This was Joe's decision."

Glenn is loyal to his assistant coaches, but UW's regression on offense under Cockhill eventually became too great to ignore, leading to his dismissal last Saturday after the season-ending loss at Colorado State and setting the table for the most important offseason of Glenn's tenure.

Burman said he won't have much role in hiring a new offensive coordinator.

"My role will be pretty minimal in the selection process," he said. "I'll probably have some dialogue with the coaches when they come to interview to let them know our vision for the program and our commitment to Wyoming football, but this'll be Joe's call.

"This is an important hire for him and his program, and I won't jeopardize that. I'll just be here to help him."

Glenn has been contacting possible candidates and working on a short list that he'll then go over with Burman.

Glenn said the next coordinator would be somebody he already knows, and the Cowboys hope to have somebody in Laramie by Christmas.

The only thing that might slow down the search is the growing number of jobs opening up around the country, starting with shakeups at major programs like Nebraska, Texas A&M and Georgia Tech that could make offers at UW less appealing.

Wyoming had other problems this year besides the offense, but Glenn said he wouldn't make any other personnel changes.

Burman said he agreed no other changes were needed.

"I think it will be enough," he said. "When you look at a football program, you've got a head coach and two coordinators and they set the whole direction for the entire program.

"We can get a new energy and obviously a new game plan for the offense, which I think we needed. Time will tell if that's enough, but Joe believes it will be."

Cockhill had just finished his fifth season as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Cockhill, a Helena, Mont., native, was a wide receiver at the University of Montana from 1990-93 and began his coaching career as a restricted earnings coach at UM in 1994. He coached the UM wide receivers from 1995-2002. During that time, Montana won seven Big Sky Conference titles, advanced to the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs nine consecutive times and played in four national championship games, winning in 1995 and 2001.

Glenn coached at Montana from 2000-2002 and brought Cockhill with him when he took the Wyoming job.

Burman is smart if he lets Joe have the complete say in who he hires. That way, if (more likely when) the guy fails, he can say he had nothing to do with it. I think Burman figures the Joe Glenn era is coming to a close anyway, no matter who he hires, so stepping aside in the hiring makes his job of dismissing Glenn easier.
