NCAA Transfer Rules

What say you guys about players transferring where they want to go? Coaches can take a giant poo on the players any given year and bail with their MILLIONS, but players can't? I am torn on this issue. I understand loyalty, but this rule I think needs to be modified.

Matt Wells is blocking Garretson from transferring to Washington because they are playing USU this year. Although I see that could be a problem, I think it is pretty petty, personally. Matt Wells gladly takes BYU/Utah table scraps at will, but when it comes time to do the same, he blocks it.

Thoughts?

Players should be able to go where they choose without losing eligibility. They should have to sit a year of competition at minimum.

Your point about the coach is spot on, and, not only that, a kid's scholarship can be pulled at any time. These are some of the unfair things that need to be addressed. On the other hand, if they are addressed, and Universities show more commitment to the athletes, then I think the athletes should also be required to sustain their commitment.

As it stands now, let them go where they want without loss of eligibility. I'm good with them sitting a year.

I second ragtime's point. They should be allowed a one time transfer where they still have to sit out a year but won't lose a year on their eligibility clock. (Any subsequent transfers would use a year like normal). I.E. Typically, a player has 5 years to play 4 seasons, if they use their one time transfer exemption, they sit the next year and will end up getting 6 years to play 4 seasons; much akin to how the medical hardship waiver now works.

I think that year sitting out is crucial. Otherwise, you would have players playing great at smaller schools as freshman, sophomores, or even juniors and bigger programs would try to "recruit" them to transfer and play right away. Having to sit a year would discourage that practice.

This I agree with. If the school/team/coach doesn't have to commit, why should the player?

Agreed on all counts. You get one transfer, have to sit out a year but don't lose a year of eligibility. This makes a ton of sense especially when a coach gets canned and the player really has no reason to stick around. We all talk about loyalty, but sometimes a school, for whatever reason, just isn't a fit.
