Nance was chosen as preseason POY and the team was picked 6th... I can guarantee one thing, if Nance wins POY we will place higher than 6th. Nance was the only Cowboy on the preseason All conf. team as well

Yet - I appreciate the underdog / overlook-us pre season prediction from the MWC. I like that edge.
Same here. If Nance does finish with POY Award, we'll be no lower than the top 3.WYCowboy said:McPeachy said:WYCowboy said:That's absolutely laughable (the fact UW is picked 6th).

I agree.

TSpoke said:well, if you notice the number of votes each team received 2-7 are very close. so I doubt many people voted us 6th and had Nance a POY. Just the way the voting averaged out. But I agree if he wins POY we won't be 6th.

Disagree.
I posted in another thread recently, but basically Wyoming has been picked in the lower half of the league nearly every year for a decade and the predictions have been incredibly accurate. There were a couple of years where we were even worse than they thought and really only one year where we outperformed expectations (McClain's last year). You could argue we outperformed the preseason picks slightly last year as well.
Long story short: Picking Wyoming to lose MWC games has been one of the more solid consistent bets in college athletics over the last decade (in both revenue sports). Hard to expect respect until it is earned.
Full Disclosure: If Nance is healthy, I think the Pokes finish in the Top 3 and make the NCAA tournament.

Looking back, Wyoming has very rarely exceeded preseason expectations.
A quick look at recent history:
13-14: Picked 7th. Finished in a 3-way tie for 5th (5,6,7) so a very slight improvement over preseason prediction.
12-13: Picked 6th. Finished 8th.
11-12: Picked 6th. Finished 6th.
10-11: Picked 8th. Finished 8th.
09-10: Picked 6th. Finished 8th.
08-09: Picked 6th. Finished 6th.
07-08: Picked 6th. Finished 8th.
06-07: Picked 8th. Finished 5th. Coach got fired. Go figure.
05-06: Picked 7th. Finished 7th.
04-05: Picked 8th. Finished T-4th.
03-04: Picked 5th. Finished T-7th.
02-03: Picked 1st. Finished T-3rd.
01-02: Picked 1st. Finished 1st.

Shyatt believes we're solid, I trust what he says. We have zero respect from these beat writers, and I get the sentiment with teams like UNLV, New Mexico, and SDSU in the mix. We are going to be one bad ass program IF Larry Nance Jr laces up his converse and plays at or near his capabilities. This is going to be a fun show at the new AA.
Our depth has hurt us when we lost our best player two years in a row. To be honest, I can't think of another MWC that has lost their two best players two years in a row. After Luke and Larry went down we just didn't have the depth to compete. But, the losses we suffered were greater than any other team suffered.calpoke25 said:WYCowboy said:So you are saying these pollsters had psychic ability in predicting the loss of Martinez 2 years ago and Nance last year?
Wyoming isn't the only team to suffer sudden losses of key players out for the rest of the season. Those things happen to everyone. Taken into the broader picture of the past decade, it's hard to argue with that the fact that picking Wyoming to lose is often a very safe bet in the MW. Those guys aren't following Wyoming basketball like we do, but they do know that picking Wyoming to lose is usually a good right.
I see no problem with being picked 6th, as Nowherepoke mentioned, you have to earn respect. If we are as good as everyone on here thinks we will be, and Larry is healthy, it will make it that much sweeter. But I see no reason for Wyoming fans to complain about a lack of respect, given our recent history.
