Nance invited to NBA Draft Combine

teams wont be taking a chance on nance. he is probably the best balanced and mature mid-big there is.

he has good measurements. his leaping ability is going to improve at the pro level. he is not done developing, and another year removed from knee surgery is going to help

his basketball I.Q. is massive. his dad, coach Edwards, and coach Shyatt... have made a true mentally dominant defensive force. everybody looks at guys that deliver high points per game in college... but that is bad thing to do when comparing to nance jr. he does everything at a high level. his body control on the low post is fascinating. the way he creates separation and can shoot with either hand, while keeping the other hand up and between the shot (which draws fouls) is hard to find.

he shoots the free throw well.

he will be drafted. and probably by a team that already has two really good post players. imagine him on the cavs. LeBron, love, and that foreigner. it allows for LeBron or nance to play small forward... which is ideal. more than likely LeBron, cause that fool can shoot. add into the fact that it sells tickets in Cleveland.

nance fits the mold with many teams. one intangible that will elevate nance; he is a team player that takes coaching well. he has 0 off the court issues. owners and gms are going to be hoping to steal him late. however, if the draft plays out funky, a team may feel forced to take him earlier.

Chicago is another team in the east that I feel likes nance. OKC, with billy... yaaaa. dallas with an over the hill dirk. Miami, possibly even knicks because they have to rebuild around fundementals. I think san Antonio... the leonard connection. I would like to see him as a nugget. but I don't think they will draft him.

personal opinion, the best destination for nance is his home town. bring him home cleveland

Don't bank on Kevin Love being in Cleveland next season.
It's no surprise he isn't 100% dedicated to playing with LeBron. He could very well stay but it's far from a guarantee.

But, Kyrie, LeBron, Love, along with Nance would make for some good basketball.

FYI

The weight is a bit disappointing from an NBA perspective. A 7'1.5" wingspan is pretty good though, and about what I expected.

Draymond green sure is productive for being the same "disappointing" height and weight... 6'7" 230

Rudy Gay isn't too shabby either... 6'8" 230

Interesting comp, but Green was measured at almost two inches shorter and ten pounds heavier. And Green is a physical player despite the smaller size. Nance relies more on athletic ability than power, and he's not going to have that same advantage in the NBA.

Gay is a SF, so I'm not entering him into the discussion.

The initial comparison I made in my head is a different Spartan: Adreian Payne, another athletic PF with range. He's got 1.5 inches and 13 pounds on Nance, but maybe that's all the difference will be between where Payne went (mid 1st) and where Nance will likely end up (2nd).

For the record, I wasn't implying that these measurements mean he'll be a bad NBA player. However, I do believe they can impact his draft stock. During the season, I had hopes that he could sneak into the end of the 1st round like how the Spurs drafted George Hill. However, seeing a PF weigh in at 227 can cause some concerns, especially as a four-year college player with a perceived limited upside.

Looking at the DraftExpress measurements database, one interesting comp in all the numbers we have so far is Dante Cunningham, who actually saw a bunch of time at SF this season over PF. I can see similarities in their skillsets, though Nance has better post game and I don't know if Nance will/can play any SF. Cunningham was the 33rd pick. At this point, I think that'd be a stretch for Nance, but there have been huge jumps in draft stock before.

However, if you want an encouraging comp, Nance's numbers are nearly identical to those of Tristan Thompson. Identical height and weight, Nance 0.25" longer wingspan, Thompson 0.5" longer standing reach, Thompson body fat 0.2% lower, Nance longer hands by 0.25" and wider by 0.5". Obviously, Nance isn't going 4th overall, though, just an interesting observation.

The TV portion of the combine begins at 1 p.m. Wyoming time on ESPN2, both Thursday and Friday. Nance is competing in the 5-on-5 team stuff, so he should hopefully get decent TV time. The games Nance's team is in are scheduled at 1:30 both days.

Sorry about the length, but the NBA is actually a bigger passion of mine than NCAA, and with the Timberwolves as bad as they've been, I put a lot of time and energy into draft discussion. Add to that Nance's involvement, and my interest climbs even higher. (Note: Even though I follow the NBA more than NCAA, let it be known that I have more Wyming Cowboys gear than I do Minnesota Timberwolves gear)

Appreciate your post, vanklomp!

I mentioned gay because Nance himself says he's a huge fan and tries to mimic his game. Do I think they're similar players? Somewhat, but I want to see how Nance improved his perimeter game over the off season.

And you may disagree with the comparison with Nance and green, but a lot of guys who make a living analyzing nba players saw a likeness between the two. Not saying who's right or wrong, but I thought it was appropriate to bring him up.

I guess I just got hung up on your use of "disappointing", because I feel like his career is going to be anything but. Good luck to the T-wolves in the draft!

I'm watching Larry right now on ESPN2 play. He just got fouled on his last offensive rebound and will be going to the free throw line. Turn it on if you guys can.

Nance with another offensive rebound and a put back dunk! Nice. Also comes back down and gets a defensive rebound and passes it out leading to a fast break lay up.

I thought Larry dominated the boards and on the defensive end, but looked a little sloppy on offense.
But he seems to be close to breaking through on offense, get him a couple looks and we could be seeing the Larry we all know he can be.
