Made it to the game yesterday.. as always, had a great time in Laramie. Took a hike around campus on Friday afternoon and was able to secure a field pass for the game. That was really exciting, thanks to the UW AD for that. Had a quick chat with Kevin McKinney, a pleasure to talk to.
First off, thanks for WYO1016 for hosting an awesome tailgate.. I had a blast, and it was great to meet from the fine folks that make up WyoNation.com. I discovered that my sister sucks at beer pong.. WYO1016s friends took us to school on that. We were a little late getting the tailgate started, but we we made up for it. We were able to get a group photo (minus gopokes1399 who stopped by for a brief moment).
That's a sexy group of WyoNation guys right there! In that you should have Matt (The Road), Chase (fromolwyoming), John (nirv117), myself, Bryan (WYO1016), guy who forgot his username, and Jerry (WYCowboy). Had a great time talking to all of them and getting to meet these guys. We'll do it again in 2014 when Montana comes to town.
Matt (of Cowboy Altitude fame) and I hung out on the field for the game.. that was a terrific experience and I had a blast. You don't really realize how fast the game of college football moves until you're down on the field and seeing these guys come flying towards the sidelines. Watching Blair Burns fly down the sidelines in front of us on his 99 yard interception return was really cool. For those wondering I didn't hear anything off-color from the coaching staff yesterday. The touchdown that Brett Smith punched in that was reviewed was pretty clear to see as a touchdown when it happened right in front of me.. also cool to see. The team played very well yesterday and didn't have too many mistakes. A nice balance of pass and rush on offense was nice to see.. I was hoping we'd push for 50 on the scoreboard. We converted some nice long third downs yesterday.. how often does that happen? The defense got pretty soft at times yesterday giving up a fluke touchdown in the first quarter, then giving up a couple of touchdowns with wide open receivers (like, no one even near the WR).. made for some easy sheep scores. The sheep are very obviously a disaster right now.. they weren't at all competitive in the game yesterday and it was never close. I hope we can ride the momentum of this game into the next three games to finish the season. The next three are winnable, but WTF happened with UNLV beating New Mexico??
Post game the Boot coming back onto the field was terrific. Kind of an interesting thing I saw, Christiansen grabbed a kid that was on the field and actually carried him over to the bronze boot and celebrated with the team near the student section.. I thought that was kind of cool. Not sure who the kid was, but I'm sure that a memory he's going to have for a lifetime.
Obviously the most exciting part of my day (aside from being on the field) was seeing my state flag helmets up close and personal. That was kind of surreal and a ton of fun. Those helmets are 2-0 in Border War games.. I'm thinking we should keep using them!
All in all yesterday was awesome. I think the ol' man and I are gonna go shoot some elk (or at least attempt to find them) this afternoon then I'll be heading back to Montana in the morning. Great win for the Cowboys, the boot will live in Laramie for another year, and another year the sheep will tell us how the boot is really theirs and blah blah blah. Go Pokes!
