MWC TV update

Caught a little bit of The Monty Show.

According to Monty:

CBS is expected to be fully involved. ESPN is firmly in conversations. Expected that the deal could be fairly comparative with the pee12.

The question to be answered impacting net values is who is producing the games. A higher payment if you are spending that payment to produce the games doesn’t mean the income is better which is part of the pee12 contract. Also the pee12 has not announced a complete TV contract yet.

The MWC is receptive to DTC (direct to consumer) broadcasting. ESPN is looking at having over 50,000 live sporting events a year with varying price packages per month.

Fox just launched a massive DTC option yesterday.

The only thing I don’t know is the cost. I think I saw something that FOX was going to be $20 per month and ESPN will have a variety up to $35 per month. Not sure exactly what it will do with the regular channels from these entities we are used to and the DTC options which will be accessible by streaming only.

Could it become a premium price to access Wyoming sports if the free MWC streaming goes away?

We will have to await when the deal is finalized.

It appears that we will survive and live to fight another day. The MWC is getting a fair deal for what we have to offer. The question going forward is: what does UW and other sister MWC schools do to grow their brand and build the programs? In the case of UW, absent a new vision and concerted effort to pursue it, we will languish as a meh program. Changing the Prez is a good start, but won't be a benefit if the BOT flubs the coming search.

I don't understand why the reconfigured Pac12 isn't able to put games on at 7:30 / 8 pm pacific time. Fresno, SDSU, Oregon State, WSU are all in the pacific time zone.

I'm worried we'll be around 1 to 1.5 mill/ school
1 to 1.5 million would be around the Sun Belt, just above MAC and about double CUSA.

My guesstimate is somewhere around the same value as before despite the traitors leaving. The key component is filling time slots and the pee8 football version doesn’t have enough games to fill the slots. The networks don’t have any alternatives to fill those slots and certainly won’t beg the MAC or CUSA to play 10 pm start games in the central time zone.

What will be interesting is if all members get an equal distribution or do UNLV and AFA get a bigger slice. Hawaii will probably get some compensation deal if their Spectrum network doesn’t get to lock out their games. Maybe the settlement distribution is the extra compensation for AFA and UNLV and only Hawaii gets a special media compensation.

It will be interesting at the least. I keep hearing it’s closer to a pee12 deal than it is to a bottom G6 conference deal. Do others know for a fact or is it simple speculation?

I haven't seen anything definitive on the pac deal much less the MWC; just a lot of speculation. It's possible the pac deal is less than speculated. What if the pac was just leaking that crap trying to put pressure on negotiations? I never believe anything until the ink is dry.

Key words I hear that temper enthusiasm. It's about exposure. Main thing is getting games on. Etc. Those temper my enthusiasm.

I'm not saying the pac deal or our deal is really low. I have no idea. I'm just saying I worry we might start seeing signs of contraction in media deals at the g6 level.

I'm hoping beyond hope that we're close to the pac.

The TV deal is largely out of the control of schools like Wyoming. We likely went from Boise running the show with the networks to UNLV and AFA. Certainly, there is an element of viewership that drives most of that, but I can't help but think that if we had a product and excitement around it at UW we could be in those discussions too. As it stands, we have a mediocre product and crummy TV metrics. We are lucky to get whatever we get.

In related news, I see the Savannah Bananas have sold out Coors Field for a game there. Perhaps it is time to think outside the box in Laramie. It seems to have worked for the Bananas.

I'm just speculating, but I would be shocked if it is anywhere in the vicinity of what the PAC schools will get.

Looking at things through an unbiased lens, the PAC definitely has teams with larger average viewership, a more recognizable brand nationally, and are generally located in larger TV markets. If that doesn't result in a more lucrative media deal, then I am completely confused about how media deals work.

The real issue is media over-saturation. Just how many college football/basketball/baseball/ etc. etc. games are there and what is the level of demand. It seems to me that there are very few truly national brands in college sports. Some like Gonzaga basketball have emerged from lesser known places but for the most part viewership is based on population and name recognition. The MWC lags in those critical elements, but so does the PAC now that its name brand schools have left. I think part of the reason we have seen some schools cut their own media deals like ND and Texas is simply they recognize conference membership and rivalries means less than before. What counts is viewership and name.

I'm not sure there's a lot of difference in market penetration in much of the g6. I think the excitement factor and appeal to the broader cfb audience is most important.

Beginning of the season: timeslots and content are more important. People are just ready to watch football.

Mid-season: football fatigue setting for casual fans and T25 matchups, interesting storyline (really great player playing), etc. are critical to capture interest.

Mid- to late-season, same factors as above + the playoff race. A MWC championship game with winner guaranteed (based on season's results) going to playoff will outdraw any other g6 championship game if those teams have no shot at the playoff. Same for all g6 leagues.

Looking from that angle, we can check the early season timeslot box but are less likely than the pac to check the mid- and late-season boxes.

The MWC media markets are bigger

I would take what we are getting now to be completely honest. Considering what we are losing compared to what we are bringing in to replace them, the same money as before would be a massive win.
The market has inflated. We'll get more, which may be the same after accounting for inflation. There's no way it's going down
