MWC Tourney

So if Fresno State wins we are playing Nevada in the pigtail game.
But if they lose to UNLV, Fresno and Nevada are playing in the pigtail game. And we are playing UNLV.

Ouch, rough stuff.
I guess all we can do is hope that our team gets healthy and can go on a little win streak here.

Wishful thinking here, but I would love nothing more than if we somehow won the tourney and because of that csu doesn't make the big dance lol. But in realistic thinking....is UNLV missing any players? Are they at full strength right now? Our team played decent against NM in the Pit, but got smoked against the sheep at home. I feel like Leonard can handle Bennett if he is healthy enough. Can Nance get back to decent health by that game? Can Derious take a smart shot selection?

Again I know it is a long shot so if you are gonna be a douchebag and say "you're stupid if you think we have a chance" go cheer for someone else. As many of you just want the season to be over, I will at least cheer for the Pokes against UNLV.

The only good thing about playing in the pigtail game is that there is a good chance of winning it, thus getting a second game, albeit a probable loss, so the tourney record would be 1-1. Without the pigtail game the likely record is 0-1.

Mo is a strange thing, and if we do go pigtail and win, we match up better against UNM than having to play UNLV on their home floor 1st thing??? but we can hang with anybody and if anybody's a great motivator Larry can get it started.
regardless the fact, thru the ups and downs it's been a fun season to follow, especially early...lol

I wish I shared the same feelings. The schedule in non-conference was so watered down only a few games really drew excitement (CU, Illinois State, SMU).

As soon as Luke went out and we saw what we were without him. It was apparent that we were going nowhere and keeping interest for me was difficult.

I love the Pokes. I still watched many games. I just wasn't optimistic and it made it less exciting for me. Is it hard to comprehend that? I'm sure I'm not the only one who felt that way.

Oh and you want optimism...I think the Pokes qualify 5 for nationals this weekend. I'm picking Cox, McCulley, Helbig, Hernandez and a surprise winner in another weight.

This will be the bracket for the MWC tournament unless something crazy happens in the last games this weekend.

1. New Mexico vs. 8.Wyoming/9.Nevada winner plays
4.Boise St. vs. 5.San Diego St. winner

2.UNLV vs. 7.Fresno St. winner plays
3.CSU vs. 6.Air Force winner

The only thing that could be different is that San Diego St. and Boise would switch seeding positions but they would still play each other or if SDSU upsets Boise this weekend and AFA upsets New Mexico then AFA would be the 5th seed and Boise the 6th seed.

Looks like better matchups for us being on this side of the bracket if we decide to show up and atleast try to play. We can beat Nevada and we match up better with New Mexico than we do UNLV or CSU. If we somehow pulled the upset we may get Boise St. in the semifinals.

If the team that showed up the other night that looked like they had quit on the season then none of it matters. I would hope that our team would have a little pride and atleast try to win but we will see. That means Washington throwing up 3 pointers like he didn't really care but he just wanted to launch a shot or Gilmore throwing up shots just for the hell of it and no one playing defense then we will get beat by Nevada. Hope they bring some intensity and purpose.

In this case.....

Wyoming advances.....then New Mexico, SDSU, UNLV, and CSU win. UNM and UNLV advance in the semis....play each other in the title game. The home court advantage debate will rage on as UNLV wins the whole thing in their own arena.

If Fresno loses they are in the pigtail game. We don't need Nevada to win.

If Fresno loses we are both 4-12. And we are 2-0 against the team below us (Nevada) and they are 1-1. Therefore we get the 7 and they get the 8. Nevada gets the 9.

Unless I am totally missing something but is that not how it works?

But I would rather be playing in the pigtail game and take our chances against NM since our style of game is similar and the whole "we would be 1-0 and momentum and new season crap" Especially if we have Leonard healthy.

If Wyoming and Fresno St. tie then Fresno St. wins the tie breaker and gets the 7th seed because Fresno St. beat UNLV and we didn't.
The way the tie breaker works is if two teams tie then they look at head to head match ups and we split with Fresno, so then it goes to how each team did with the best team in the league. So they look at how each team did with New Mexico. Both teams lost to New Mexico twice so then it goes to the next team which is UNLV. Wyoming got beat by UNLV twice and Fresno beat UNLV once so therefore Fresno wins the tie breaker.

The only way Wyoming stays out of the pigtail game is if Nevada wins and makes it a 3 way tie so then Wyoming beat Nevada twice and Fresno and Nevada split so therefore Wyoming wins the tie breaker in that case.

Nevada will not beat CSU at CSU so Wyoming will be in the pigtail game.

I think Boise will beat San Diego St. I think Boise has a serious chance to win the tournament. I think they are playing the best basketball in the league right now with all of their guys back healthy. If they can avoid playing UNLV I think they can win the tournament.
I think Wyoming matches up better with Boise though than they do CSU or UNLV. Probably doesn't matter as Wyoming will get beat by any of those teams.

Wyoming has continually given UNM fits. I would love to see a third matchup, because the 8 seed could very easily beat the 1 seed here. They beat us by 4 at home, they pulled away with 23 more free throw attempts than us in ALBQ, and still only beat us by 11 points. Get us on a Neutral floor where Wyo knows they need to scrap something up to salvage a postseason...It intrigues me.

Especially if we get a friggin win a couple days before, and hell we do have this weekend off!
We absolutely need Leonard healthy and hopefully Nance can gain some more weight back.

Everyone wants to throw this season away, but honestly, I like watching Washington play. I'd like to see him continue his Cowboy career for a few more games...Healthy, and able to finish strong. Seriously, would it be so bad if we had a shot at winning the CBI tourney?

I agree. Everyone makes it seem like it is the worst thing ever. This team could could go far in the cbi. Look at what we did against the teams in our OOC schedule...we won them all, and most of them convincingly. Get players like Adams, and Grabau, and Nance, ya know the main players we will have next year (besides Hankerson) some more playing time. Get the confidence up for the young guns. And on top of that, Hankerson will get to practice with the team even more.

The more, the merrier.

For those who do want to argue the benefit of the CBI, Pitt won it last year, and this year...Well, NCAA bound. Hmm? I would say that it is still beneficial. All our guys Seniors and underclassmen will get more time against some good opponents.
Everyone will complain about our OOC BUT:
NCCU 22-8, likely NCAA bound, SOUTHERN 21-9, likely NCAA bound, Colorado 20-9, likely NCAA bound, Illinois St. 17-14, NIT/CBI bound, Denver 20-8, likely NCAA/NIT bound, SMU 15-15, likely CBI/CIT or N/A. Not to mention a win over conf oppo SDSU 21-8, likely NCAA/NIT.
It is sad that our OOC rank is based off of preexisting ranking of last years teams. These teams may have been nobodies last year, but they've proven to be somebodies this year, but for us, that doesn't matter.

I feel ya kansascowboy... we beat a lot of ncaa tourney teams this season. Yes we shit the bed in MWC play but Martinez being out had a HUGE deal to do with it. It is NOT Shyatts fault that the team collapsed w/out him. Again 1.5 recruiting classes. This not the same as Brett Smith going out during year 4 of the program. This is year two.
And the whole thing about us not having d1 players...good god. Adams and Larry Nance are beasts.
Grabau, is solid as hell. Can hit some 3s. Doesn't turn the ball over much. Can dish it out.

I think our key to the Big Dance this season is.....
Beating Nevada in the pigtail game. Surprising NM, hopefully the old rule of "it's hard to beat a team 3 times in a season" is true. Just not for the Nevada game.
Then we gotta have Boise beat SDSU. Then hopefully, again, the "it's hard to beat a team 3 times in a season" is true again with Boise. Then in the MWC Championship game, hopefully we get AFA. I think UNLV is gonna be a beast but for some reason I feel that AFA can take them in Vegas because they can drain the 3 and they SHOULD be able to play through adversity as they are military boys.

Now watch every nay sayer call me a homer and an idiot for logically saying HOW we get to the tourney.

I am not saying that is what is going to happen but that is what NEEDS to happen.

Que cuttslam, and sdpoke in 3...2....1...

This is why you are a idiot, they are not beasts, they have POTENTIAL to be very good players. Beasts? What the fuck do you smoke in L-Town, weed or pole?
