WIth the tournament starting Wednesday, I figured I would have a little fun and make some predictions! Interested to hear everyone else's thoughts as well.
I think there are going to be a lot of upsets, and that the tournament is a lot more wide open than people think. I just don't see there being many blowouts. New Mexico, and SDSU are clear favorites, but they are also very beatable.
Game 1 Wed., Mar. 12 No. 8 Utah State vs. No. 9 Colorado State 2 p.m. PT -Aggies 73-68
Game 2 Wed., Mar. 12 No. 7 Fresno State vs. No. 10 Air Force 4:30 p.m. PT Fresno 63-59
Game 3 Wed., Mar. 12 No. 6 Boise State vs. No. 11 San Jose State 7 p.m. PT Boise 82-56
QUARTERFINALS
Game 4 Thu, Mar. 13 No. 1 San Diego State vs. Utah State Noon PT Aggies 72-69 The shocker of the tourney, Aggies shoot the lights out and stun the Aztecs. Noon Start games usually do throw teams out of wack.....
Game 5 Thu, Mar. 13 No. 4 UNLV vs. No. 5 Wyoming 2:30 p.m. PT Pokes 59-55 Hot Start for the Pokes, Rebels fight back, Sobey finishes in the end for the Pokes.
Game 6 Thu, Mar. 13 No. 2 New Mexico vs. Fresno 6 p.m. PT Lobos 73-64 UNM just too experienced
Game 7 Thu, Mar. 13 No. 3 Nevada vs. Boise State 8:30 p.m. PT Nevada 79-76 The Burton show lifts the Pack.
Semi's
Game 8 Fri., Mar. 14 Utah State Vs Wyoming 6 p.m. PT Pokes 71-65 Pokes come out firing and win a tight contest.
Game 9 Fri., Mar. 14 New Mexico V Nevada UNM 68 UNR 63 Tight contest, but Lobos pull it out.
Championship
5 Wyoming V 2 NM Pokes 67-66
Now, I may be a little too optimistic, but I can never pick against Wyoming hah! Realistically, a lot of things would have to go right for this to happen and us winning the whole thing would be a hell of pleasant surprise. However, I really do believe Utah State is going to shock the Aztecs with all their seniors, I just have a weird gut feeling, setting up an easier road to the finals than expected.
Will beating a highly favored New Mexico team be likely? No....But is it possible, why not? They have beaten us in two heartbreakers, and we simply don't have the depth to matchup down low. On paper, they would probably be a 10-15 point favorite, but the tournament is wacky sometimes!!!
Realistically, I would be satisfied with a semi-final appearance with all the program has been through this year. Anything greater than that would be a pleasure.
Can't wait till Thursday!
