Mountain West Strategizes with Conference USA
By Mountain West Conference on August 20, 2010 1:06 PM | No TrackBacks
Followed up on various media reports regarding a potential Mountain West Conference-Conference USA merger, and confirmed that representatives of both leagues did indeed meet yesterday in Colorado Springs.

I like the idea of adding schools like Houston, SMU, Tulsa, and even East Carolina (scheduling would suck) & Memphis.

But teams like Rice, Tulane, UAB... uhm NO!

I really don't think this is a good idea. I mean, the C-USA has ranked well below the MWC every year. Even the MAC rated higher as a conference last year in football. So why merger with a mediocre conference that really was no better than the WAC was with BSU? I guess I just don't see it helping us out any. We should continue down the BCS path the way we have been. I think as a conference we're still better off. We still have TCU and BSU that are vying for BCS prominence. AFA is getting better under Calhoun, WYO is making strides. CSU will get better, and FSU and Nevada are no pushovers either. Really, in looking at our teams I could see this conference with 3 or 4 preseason top 25 teams in a few years. And if thats the case, we're still probably going to have BSU or TCU each year trying for BCS contention. Four years of this and we're a legit BCS conference.

It's not really a merger.. basically, the conferences will still be separate, but play for a championship (winner of MWC vs. winner of CUSA).. is how I read it. Plus some cross scheduling. But I agree, CUSA is a lesser conference.. but better than the MAC.

Explaining the meeting more.

We're playing for a championship of what though? It's not a conference championship, it's not a national championship. So what championship is it, and will anyone really take notice of it, or even care?

My previous question was about the rumor by the way. Not that it is happening. I was just curious what we would be playing for if it would come to pass.

According to the rumors, it would basically be for a BCS Bowl.

I don't like the idea to be honest. First off I'm not a big fan of CUSA anyways. They have some quality programs, but they also have some programs that make Wyoming look like world beaters.

They don't deserve a chance at a BCS bid. I know that is harsh coming from a school/conference that isn't AQ status, but it is the truth. They are a Houston away from being under the MAC. The MWC has proven their worth by reaching multiple BCS games and with the addition of Boise State only strengthens that claim. If our top dogs take care of business like they are suppose to, the MWC will have team(s) in the BCS. Let us just worry about trying to get AQ status ourselves. Giving CUSA a slight shot at it is not good for the MWC imho when they aren't deserving in the first place (outside of possibly Houston).

I don't agree with it either, but here's what I see.. if the BCS allows this to happen (winner of inter-conference game goes to BCS), I see the MWC getting a free shot every year. I'm certain that the MWC champ would beat the CUSA champ nearly every year.

Yeah, but if we did happen to lose in a fluke, it would mean that some 8-5 C-USA team is going to a BCS game! Garbage! That's why I don't think the NCAA would allow it.

First...it isn't the NCAA allowing things, it is the BCS. Different deals.

Second...couldn't agree more, that in playing a CUSA team for a chance a BCS, we would be giving something up, not gaining something.

Easiest way for a BCS birth (non AQ) is to win all your games, and you are in. Period. Utah gave that priveledge up, by going to the PAC 10, bWHYu is giving is up as well, by trying to go Indy, or at least by shitting in the bed they helped make. I don't think the MWC should thin it out further.
