MWC Standings

So now we have some interesting things happening, Three way tie for 3rd place. UNLV beat us and split with BSU. We beat BSU once and still have to play them at home.

UNLV finishes the season vs CSU, @ AFA, vs SDSU and @ NEV

BSU finishes the schedule @ FRES, @ WYO, vs NEV and @ AFA

We finish the season vs AFA, vs BSU, @ USU and vs CSU

We clearly have the weakest schedule but will most likely lose to USU and could drop one to CSU at home all things considering hell Air Force could come back with a vengeance from us beating them at home.

AFA got whipped at home today. By Nevada. Boise seems like a more likely loss than the Zoomies.

USU is the most overrated team in the MWC, Fresno State the most underrated. Our most likely loss will be to BSU.

Yeah I think USU WAS the most overrated team, I don't think there's anyone impressed with them at this point. They've lost 8 of their last 11 games.

Not impressed by any team in the MWC outside of the Lobos because they are playing the best when they need to be. But I'm going to be worried about every game with no Nance and still no one stepping up.

SDSU can be really good at times....but like Wyoming with Nance, SDSU seems a bad injury to Thames away from having no direction as a team.

If Boise can beat Fresno this week, they'll have a good shot at finishing 3rd. UNLV has quite a few losses in their future. 1st five bye seeds should be 1. New Mexico, 2. SDSU, 3. Boise, 4. UNLV, 5. Wyoming.

I can not believe the lack of faith on this board. We will NOT lose to CSU at home. We still have a very real chance to win out. One bad half and most of you are back on suicide watch. I can't tell if its sad or hilarious

Well, about the only one who really kept up the stepping up was Sobey. The rest either played sloppily or just not very well. And the lack of Nance down low was apparent from about 5 minutes left in the 1st half, onward. On both offense and defense.

I agree. Losing on the road in the MWC happens. Ask UNLV what happened when they visited Moby about two weeks ago. They walked out with a larger loss margin than the Pokes did. Need them to step up at home and prove they can still play good team ball.

i like the fact tied for 3rd place still, although tie breakers etc.....there's still gonna be some "upsets" upcoming and if we do like I thought and go 3-1 the last 4(losing in Logan) a 4th or 5th place is not a bad showing

I haven't really said anything about the CSU game (would rather pretend it didn't happen), but it's not just one bad half. It was an exceptionally bad half. I have never seen a Shyatt coached team (including his first stint) look so helpless on defense. The problem is that I don't think it was lack of effort, coaching, or preparation. The problem is that without Nance we just don't have the personnel to protect the paint or compete on the glass. That's not a problem that is going to get fixed.

Pokes can still win some games, but the season just got recalibrated in a significant way. They will have to play their absolute best to compete in the remaining games.

Especially transition defense. We may have allowed more transition buckets Saturday night than we did all season. I know that we were getting killed on the boards, but I'd rather lose a few offensive rebounds than give up fast break points.

Yeah. Prior to that, we had given up 1 all season.

Wyoming will have to go 2-2 the last 4 games to get the bye in the first round.

Not sure this Wyoming team can go 2-2 the rest of the way. Even if they do then that means they get to play either Boise St. or UNLV in the quarterfinals of the MWC tournament.

The problem with not having Nance not only hurts the defense on the inside but it hurts the outside defense as well.

When Wyoming has played zone or even man to man with Nance they were able to guard the outside with more pressure on the ball as they knew that if they got beat they had a lot of help with Nance down low to possibly alter a shot or block it and with Nance in the game it made Cooke more effective on the defensive end as well.

Take Nance out and not only do they not have Nance as a presence down low but now Cooke is not as effective down low and you get CSU taking the ball to the rim harder with no inside presence and the Wyoming guards have to collapse down more to help out and then it leaves guys wide open from the 3 point line and the Wyoming guards can't rotate out as easy to cover up a man so if the first kick out gets covered up they still have a guy wide open with one more pass and that's how they got so many open looks and had their best shooting night from 3 for the year. Also they get more offensive rebounds because our best defensive rebounder on the team is gone which gives them more opportunities to score.

Honestly I am not really sure Shyatt will be able to come up with much in a situation like this. You can try to scheme a little different but I don't think in this situation it matters. We lost the best defensive and offensive player on the team and the way he played it made everyone else better and more able to do their jobs on the court to a better ability and now it has been taken away.

It would be like having our football team lose Brett Smith and Jason Thompson at the beginning of the season last year. How many games would the Wyoming football team have won?

Don't get me wrong I am not trying to compare a Shyatt coached team with a Christensen coached team but my point is that Nance was like a Quarterback to our basketball team and everything he did on the court made everyone else that much better and now there is this giant gaping hole that not even coach Shyatt will be able to do a whole lot to fix in just a couple of weeks.

Shyatt of course knows a lot more than myself and I suppose if there is a coach who could come up with something he would be one of them for sure. I sure hope he does and Wyoming shocks everyone but if I am being realistic about it I am not sure what the hell he will be able to come up with.

I think Sellers should play more actually. When he was in there the other day he actually didn't play that bad and he is pretty strong. He just needs to not travel and I think he could get some good looks down low by using his body and being physical to get to the basket. The more he plays in actual games I think he will get that much better. Plus if he could turn into a half way decent player it would give that much more depth for next year. He obviously isn't going to be the defensive player that Nance was but he is a real big body that could at least take up some space.

Anyways hope we figure it out.

Go Pokes! :thumb:

There is an auto bid for mwc tourney champ correct? Can wyo make a run?
Unless Nance makes an unheard of recovery, and the rest of the team stops playing like shit, we'll be lucky to get past the first game.
