The highest-ranked conference champion from the American, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, Pac-12, and Sun Belt gets into the College Football Playoff.

1a. Poinsettia Bowl vs Pac-12
The Poinsettia gets to pick any of the top MW teams available from the teams not in the College Football Playoff.

1b. Guaranteed Rate Bowl vs Big Ten or Big12
If a slot opens up from either the Big Ten or Big12 the MW is guaranteed a spot.

- Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl vs MAC
- Famous Idaho Potato Bowl vs MAC
- Sheraton Hawaii Bowl vs CUSA
- Isleta New Mexico Bowl vs CUSA

There's a chance to get up to four more teams out of these bowls. [If there are openings]

Oregon State and Washington State can be in any of the Pac12 bowls and along with former Pac-12 teams [Arizona, Arizona State, Cal, Colorado, Oregon, Stanford, UCLA, USC, Utah, and Washington] will all receive consideration for legacy Pac-12 bowls, depending on their respective statuses:
- Holiday Bowl vs ACC
- Las Vegas Bowl vs SEC
- Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl vs Big 12
- Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl vs ACC
- Valero Alamo Bowl vs Big 12
