Morris Marshall - All State/All Region 2014-2015

Nowherepoke, I haven't been able to see much of Marshall's game. Could you give a little scouting report on him based on what you've seen and what kind of a role you see him playing for the Pokes?

Sure, for what little my opinion is worth (zero). For reference, if anyone is interested, you can watch the archived streams of some of his games from the past year here: http://www.ihigh.com/santafesaints/broadcasts.html?mode=school&schoolid=26859&status=completed. He was hurt and missed some of the games in early January, but there are several games archived that he played in. He is #3.

What impressed me from what little I watched was his mid-range game. He has some nifty floaters and other mid-range shots in his arsenal. He is a pretty decent perimeter shooter, but it looks like he needs space to get it off. Might be a concern when trying to shoot over longer MWC defenders closing out.

One of the concerning items, no necessarily from what I saw but from the stats, is how rarely he gets to the FT line. Only 67 FTA compared to 400 FGA this past season. Obviously he prefers to pull up and shoot a mid range shot or floater as I mentioned earlier.

I think, like most JC players, it will take him some time to acclimate to MWC level basketball and to Shyatt's defensive demands. If he buys in and works hard, he could be our 8th or 9th guy this year and possibly step in as a starter his senior year replacing Josh Adams. He is a different player than Nate Sobey, but I can see him having a similar career arc at UW.

You don't think he will be a starter?

I was thinking he would be simply because we have 4 spots open and he has 2 years of starting/consistent playing time.

I don't think so, but that's JMO. We do have 4 spots open, but two of those are in the frontcourt, so we have 2 perimeter positions which will be filled with some combo of Lieberman, Washington, Conway, James, McManamen, Marshall, and Gorski. I think Marshall will get into the rotation, but not start. Kind of a normal progression for a JC player. Modest contributor as a Junior and then major contributor as a senior.

My guess is that nobody, not even Coach Shyatt, knows right now what the perimeter rotation will look like next year. I do think we have some decent options and more depth on the perimeter than we have had before even after losing Grabau/Hankerson. The frontcourt will be our issue. Limited options there, barring a spring signing breakthrough.

There is a lot of noise on the other Wyo board that Shyatt is hot on the tail of a 5 year senior big. That could really change the forecast for next season. I think it could be a game changer.

I think Marshall, today, is a starter. He has experience and seems like he can play. Now, come practice anything can happen. I think it makes sense to lightly pencil him in until he proves he can't handle it

I watched some of Marshall's games. IMO I don't see him being able to start next year. He will come off of the bench.

As far as a 5th year senior big I was trying to see who is out there that we could possibly pick up but can't find much right now.

Did they give a name? I don't go to the other board. Heck, I don't even know what the other board is.

I don't know if "lot of noise" or "hot on the trail of" are accurate. Some folks were asking if we were looking for one, and then they talked at length about the big guy at one of the CC in state. I don't think it got much further than speculation or hearing that Duncan went to go watch someone play. We can't jump to conclusions, that's how hearts are broken.

I've watched a lot of his games and I actually think he is going to be an immediate impact for UW as the 6th man giving us a bench that actually scores points one that we haven't seen in a long time and while I'm probably over shooting it because it's hard to compare his play to those he plays against in a much lesser league he is going to do us proud.

A juco guy wouldn't be a 5th year senior though.

If McM doesn't step up beyond how he was playing this year, I think this guy could start and keep McM the sixth man. It all depends on how well he does on the D side. And hopefully along with McM, and Gorski and a few others, they get better at their free throws. I've always been struck by the guys that are sharp shooters beyond the arc, struggle with a wide open uncontested 15 footer.

Found this article.

Has the top 25 impact Juco recruits in the country.

Chris Boucher is listed in the top 3 so hope we pick him up still but Morris Marshall is listed at number 16 in the country.

Marshall must be even better then some of us think. Great pick up by the staff.

Now to get Boucher if possible.

Whoa, so Marshall is one of the top Juco guys in the country? Does that mean his chances to start are a lot better than we thought?

Get Boucher and we feature a starting lineup with 3 guys who have been starting for 2+ seasons.

Watch any of his games he is a great player but it's hard to tell if someone great in Juco will be at the next level which is why I think he will be 6th man that we haven't had in years. It will take him time to adapt but he will as the 6th man.

From the games I've watch if he has the same drive and his skill translates over he will be MWC New comer of the year I do believe he will have that type of impact from what I have seen.

I think with as many spots as there are up for grabs, it should make summer time an interesting off-season.
God I hope Vorel's new replacement kicks ass with keeping up with the hoops players and their practices and workouts.

What, are you looking for a Vorel 2.0? Maybe your upset because I think this JC recruit is Michael Jordan 2.0.

Lol....

So touchy Kansas.

Someone recently put out a list ranking the JC players from Florida in the Class of 2015: http://mylineageofchampions.com/florida-juco-rankings-class-of-2015-

Marshall checks in at #7 on the list, just ahead of Shane Rector who signed with USU.

Out of curiosity, I glanced through the list to see if there were any big men available out of that region (just because of our staff's Florida ties) and there isn't much. Pretty much the only one is Anton Waters, and undersized 4 man being recruited by ETSU, UTA, EMU, etc.
