WAC to file lawsuit against Nevada, Fresno State and Mountain West
Posted by DanHinxman at 9/13/2010 4:08 PM PDT on rgj.com
The Reno Gazette-Journal has learned that the Western Athletic Conference will file a lawsuit against Nevada, Fresno State and the Mountain West Conference.

The suit is in response to the two schools’ revelations that they plan to leave the conference for the Mountain West in 2011.

The RGJ has obtained a copy of the lawsuit.

Jane Tors, special assistant to the president for media relations, confirmed Nevada had received the lawsuit and said President Milton Glick was not immediately available for comment.

I wonder how much this will backfire in Benson's face when it is shown that the clause would have only been enacted had BYU signed on with the WAC.

I'm waiting for the counter-suit to be filed against bywho and the whack if we can prove they conspired to do the MWC in. :o

From what I can tell, they are only suing to keep them in the conference until 2012. Didn't see anything about the $5 mill penalty. But its not a very detailed article and no copy of the lawsuit online.

Still, is the WAC just hell bent on self destructing? Who would want to join the conference when all they do is complain and lose. They could have spun this positively, added a few teams, and moved on, and nobody would have noticed.

They should be jumping on the Western FCS teams while they have the chance, but the Big Sky just expanded last week to include Cal Poly and UC-Davis (two likely WAC candidates), and will probably take in Southern Utah. Only thing I can imagine is that they'll be looking at the two Montana schools, Portland St and Sac St.. instead of the two California schools. WAC is literally killing themselves and their rep right now.

Plus, Hawaii is actively pursuing the idea of getting out of the WAC and going Indy in football and putting all other sports in the Big West ASAP!!!! From the board I go to, besides good ole WyoNation, Sports Hawaii, it sounds like Hawaii is the ONLY WAC school being proactive on doing something!

Big Sky added those two for football only. I think the Sky is waiting for Idaho to rejoin 'cos if they wanted SSU, they would've added them at the same as the two California schools.

Honestly, the Sky did this to keep the Montana schools from leaving.

The WAC is on life support and it's only a matter of time before the "doctor" will pull the plug on the confernce.

Why would Idaho go back to the Big Sky? They're investing millions into the Kibbie Dome, plus they make a shit load of money from their ESPN contract, much more than they'd make from the Big Sky.

The WAC will be DOA in a few months. Idaho can't afford to go at it as an Indepedent in football. Only conference that could take them would be the Sun Belt but I seriously doubt they would! Now the Big West could take them except one litte problem....the BWC doesn't sponsor football anymore.

Listen, Hawaii wants out ASAP. Louisiana Tech will hi-tail for C-USA the moment Houston joins the MWC. So....

Montana and Montana St. aren't going anywhere. I could see PSU and bal-Sac state maybe going, but I doubt they'd last long. The only thing they bring is better media markets...surely not better competition.

I may not have this 100% correct, but I believe the NCAA has a moratorium on FCS teams moving to the FBS level for about another year. That is the reason the WAC is trying to keep Fresno St. & Nevada from leaving until that moratorium is taken off. This is nothing more than a delaying tactic to keep Fresno St. & Nevada in the WAC until 2012. The lawyers will be the only winners - $$$.
