I was dissecting the 2008 season and looking at it as a possible playoff perspective. Utah was the only team to go undefeated every other team had at least 1 loss.
Using a SoS, W:L and a combination of the teams Utah beat that beat/played other teams.
As much as I want to and in 2008 needed to see Utah in the NC Game just to make a G5 statement, I can't consciously give them one of the top 4 spots. Because they didn't beat anyone except Michigan and Oregon State both of which were mediocre P5 Teams that year. Sure they beat TCU and BYU who were ranked but they aren't G5 so they don't recognize them as deserving of those ranks to begin with.
They beat TCU who only beat BYU who was ranked 9th, BYU beat an un-ranked Washington, Utah beat Michigan who went 3-9 only wins coming against #9 Wisconsin and Oregon State also un-ranked but they did have a solid season and beat #1 USC.
So when you take all those factors Utah was so deserving and smashed the shit out of Alabama but if I was on a playoff committee there is no way I would give them a top 4 spot. Week 16 they were #5 and finished #2 overall after beating Bama.
This alone I can not see it being possible for a G5 team to ever make it in the top 4 w/o 4 P5 top 10 wins. I really hope the G5 Conference Commissioners start working on something soon otherwise we'll just continue to window shop relevancy.
