Merger

Ok guys I know some fans are happy and some hate the merger it's like that with all schools that are a part of this. But we need to make the best of it. The new league makes sure we stay above leagues such as the SunBelt and the MAC we are the best of the rest if you will . It make a nice football conference when you take schools like ECU Southern Miss Marshall Tulsa Wyoming Air Force CSU Fresno State and Nevada thats a damn good football league really. Basketball is strong too with UNLV CSU New Mexico UTEP Southern Miss UAB Tulsa and Nevada. Ya'll don't play baseball but C-USA was already one of the best baseball leagues in the country now we get to add Fresno State to that. Guy's the TV deal will be goood no ESPN. It will be FOX/FSN NBC sports and or CBS Sports I can give you a little info on that if you would like.

Yeah, Cowboys are on the up and up in basketball, and actually have a good sized stadium (seats over 15,000 and have packed in over 16,000).

Truth be told, I'm a bit neutral on the merger, seeing both points to it. But I'm moreso for it, as it garuntees stability.

I'm positive on the Merger I see it just like I saw the MWC forming and leaving the WAC behind we didn't make huge strides but we made strides and we had a great run and right now outside of the BCS conferences you are just shit out of luck.

If this merger puts fun in football and makes it so teams at least start getting some money back I'm all for it. Unfortunately College Football is like Real world income. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer it's been happening since the BCS came about.

2011 BCS Conferences Revenue.

All told, Division I-A* revenue in 2010-2011 tops $6.2 billion, with the five major football conferences (sorry, Big East) bringing in $4.3 billion of that total.

But before we run down all of the figures, there’s a conference measure that needs to be taken. As these are figures for the 2010 – 2011 “year” (which typically ends June 30, but that’s not universal for all reports), this is a snapshot of that simpler time before radical conference realignment began. In this world, Nebraska was among 12 actual teams in the Big 12, the Big Ten still has the highly logical 11-team lineup, “Pacific” teams were at most one state away from that ocean and the Big East wasn’t a complete joke of a football conference. OK, the Big East was already a complete joke of a football conference in 2010 – 2011, but not like it’s about to be.

Total Revenue By Conference
SEC: $1,066,935,731
Big Ten: $966,799,125
Big 12: $890,308,681
ACC: $753,069,826
Pac-10: $648,928,528

Average Team Revenue By Conference*
SEC: $88,911,311
Big Ten: $87,890,830
Big 12: $74,192,390
Pac-10: $64,892,853
ACC: $62,755,819

It's absurd that there is a group of people put in place to keep that money in specific conferences and yes I do believe that is all the BCS is good for.

I agree with you and with what you said in another thread about stopping at 18. The 24 team just seems wierd and would almost completly seperate ourselves from fbs football in a defacto seperate division. Keep it at 18.Do you know more about the tv contract? If so I would love to hear more.

What kind of additional information do you have and what's your source? I'd be interested in knowing more of what you know. And are you saying a TV deal with no ESPN is good?

I heard somewhere that UTEP wants or might want North Texas in the conference.
TV markets.
DFW is #5.
Greenville-New Bern-Washington is #103.
Houston is # 10.
San Antonio is # 37.
So UTSA could be good if the program can get respectable quickly enough because the San Antonio folks have wanted a team for quite a while the way I understand it.
Texas State should belong to the Austin market at # 49.
If you look at Texas State's recruiting this past year it seems to be trending up.
Anyway, a merger needs to have good enough teams of course but also TV market.
If Georgia State was looking good right now, well, that's the # 8 tv market.

Well.........I can't say what I want about some of the other stuff.

There are a lot of programs that "NOBODY WATCHES".
Teams that are in highly populated areas probably have a better chance at gaining an audience.
UTSA and Texas State have years of more than 30,000 students that may have an interest in their school's sports, where as Rice has only 5 or 6 thousand students a year, even though Rice is in Houston.

As far as GSU, I was saying "If" that was a program that was READY that it would be good for the Eastern side of C O N F E R E N C E G I G A N T I C U S.

You tell me "No" but you really mean "YES, YES, YES, " and I know it.

Actually, you're completely wrong. UTSA averaged 35521 attendance for their 1st year of football.. and only 2 of those games were against fellow FCS opponents, the rest were against D2 type schools. Texas State averaged about 15000 fans per game, their stadium holds about 16000 so their games were pretty close to sold out. If you can get 35K to show up to watch your team play D2s and D3s, I'd say your upward trajectory is pretty good. :twocents:

I know Alyssa talked about this stuff a few weeks ago. She is not talking about attendance at games. She is talking about alumni and the large bases that they make over years and years. She is saying stuff like Rice has a small alumni base because they only have 5,000 or so students at university but that another university might have 40 or 50 thousand students a year and after years and years the alumni base is large to support their university generation after generation. She'd probably put you in the penalty box for saying she is completely wrong lol.

Sorry...I just don't want to be the WAC....talking about this makes me feel like we are all hypocrites. I can see UTSA more than Texas State...if you can bring in 30k plus in fans then yes, maybe there is a chance. What is UTSA academics like? I really honestly have no desire to have either in this league; and part of this reason is because I think that anything more than 20 teams is WAY too much. I want Utah State on our side, Temple on the East Side and that I am fine staying right there!

Academics don't really play into these decisions unless someone is going to the Pac12 or Ivy league.

No offense Mr. Titleist, but I'm sure I can pull many conversations from when the WAC was announcing the addtion of Texas State and UTSA into the league....they were laughed at, shunned and pissed on. Truth of the matter is, why bring in SHIT to the league to add 'television" markets. There is a BIG difference between bringing in the Austin Market when you have Texas vs Texas State. We are going to have to agree to disagree, and if you don't think they are garbage teams then you are actually wrong. I understand that UTSA had a better than average first year football team....but I have no desire to see them in my teams league so we can be laughed at, shunned and pissed on even more.

You and anyone else are more than welcome to fall in line and accept this new soon to be 30 team league, but I myself have no desire to me a part of it. I am starting to have a hard time getting excited for college football, and this is coming from a fan that eats, sleeps and breathes college football season.

You are entitled to your position, and I am entitled to mine

Also....that's GREAT that they had a 35k average attendance at their games, but tell me what percentage of the San Antonio TV Market that UTSA will own on Saturdays over the next 5 years? Are they a quality enough team to compete in the MWC or CUSA....no they are not. So once again, UTSA AND Texas State do NOT belong.

Please don't tell me that I am completely wrong when you are basing your "who's watching" off of paid attendance. Their paid attendance is great...but how many TV sets were watching them? How many will? What share of the San Antonio TV market will they hold in 12 months, 2 years, 5 years, 10 years? :twocents:

We can bitch and moan all you like but it is what it is. I think WYO has an opportunity to take advantage of the situation and become an upper echelon team in this conference. We won't have anyone to blame but ourselves if we don't.

Sure the dream conference would have been the old MWC + BSU but that has come and gone. This is the hand that's been dealt.

UTSA academics should be good enough.
It is part of the Longhorns system.
All I know is it is popular for the MBA programs that ranked 28th nationally (according to ??) 2 or 3 years ago.

"If you change your mind. I'm the first in line. Honey I'm still free. Take a chance on me."
"Gonna do my very best and it ain't no lie. If you put me to the test, if you let me try."
"Take a chance on me."

Cheer up SLC. Don't be a Jacob Marley type. Play some ABBA. Get up and sing and dance and be happy like me!!
