Men's Basketball Recruiting - Late Signing Period

Elijah Stewart is an ESPN top 100 recruit for the class of 2014. He's currenlty committed to Loyola Marymount, but is seeking his release.

He's 6'5", so he could probably play SF for Wyoming. He would be a huge get for Shyatt.

Stewart would be an absolute program changer. Very good shooter from long-range and freakishly athletic. He also has the ability to pull up from mid-range off the dribble, something the Pokes have lacked for a long time.

Unfortunately, I imagine the Pokes will have a hard time getting this kid. He was under-recruited the first time around because he really didn't show what he could until his senior season and by that time, all the big programs had already used up all of their scholarships. You can bet that this time around, he will the vast majority of Pac12 teams all over him.

Yeah, but he's still class of 2014, so the vast majority of Pac 12 schools that used up their scholarships still won't have available scholarships. The schools that had attrition would have scholarships available. Who knows? Maybe Duncan has an in with him since he's from L.A.

Maybe he's looking for immediate playing time, something UW could offer.

Either way, we need depth at the post position (PF or C, whichever).

Adams did the exact opposite when Nance went down and became 1st team material (if he had played like that since the first part of the season, he would easily have been 1st team All Conference).

Even though he'll now be technically a walk-on, Hankerson probably gets the 3rd spot.

Four thoughts:

1) I totally agree about the PF/C position. My impression is that Coach Shyatt is more interested in using a PF-type for his biggest player and does not seem to use a true Center much. I would not be surprised to see coach sign two players who are at least 6'7" (I hope talller) with the larger of the two being a transfer that can play immediately.

2) Coach Shyatt does not seem to care much about whether a player is on scholarship when it comes to putting someone one the floor when it matters. In 1997-98 he even started a former walk-on in Justin French when there were plenty of other Forwards on scholarship.

3) I believe that the growth we saw in Josh Adams was what one would hope for from a Sophomore. I was impressed, but I hope to see some more players hit their stride at the end of the Sophomore year in the future.

4) Given what we have see Coach do for player development, I do not expect much out of any of the incoming Freshmen and I do suspect we will be pleasantly surprised by what we see from at least one of the players who redshirted this year. I have high hopes for McManamen because he even got a start last year. Coach obviously has some degree of confidence in his judgement--if not his skill level yet.

My thoughts (you may or may not agree) about who to sign for the class:

Get the best players possible. I don't care if it's two 5'9 PGs or two 7' centers. Shyatt knows how to coach to his players to win, and doesn't "need" certain types of players to win. Sure, he WANTS specific type of players, every coach does. Shyatt can run a 5 guard system that would work. He can run Josh at the PG and 4 forwards and make it work.
Let's just make sure they can play at a high level immediately.

I think we have some good guard depth for next season, and would like to get some guards that are taller like McManamen (6'5").
I would absolutely love to get a player with the shot like Luke Martinez, the pure athleticism of Josh Adams, and height of McManamen, but so would NBA GM's.

Guys that can rebound would be good, especially since Larry gets the majority of our boards. Don't make Larry do all the work.

The MWC has pretty prohibitive rules discouraging transfers between MWC institutions. The student-athlete would have to sit out a year paying their own way. So, no to the USU/UNLV players. Stone won't be continuing his career anyway and Jones is a cancer. Davis is a nice player that will find a quality D-1 landing spot.

With the new, low-end academic schools in the conference, it is a shame that the MWC will not let kids from Boise State, UNLV, and the Cal-State schools upgrade their degrees by transferring to us, UNM, CSU or even Nevada-Reno or USU if they can get in--especially if they graduate in four years and should be looking at a decent grad-school.

I actually almost expect to see a senior transfer who graduates in May, like Granberry was, for one of the available scholarships.

Another question, with Shyatt's disdain for transfers, what do you think we'll end up with? I'm guessing with the two available scholarships we'll get a juco with three years of eligibility and a grad transfer.

I am hoping we don't go with a grad transfer. Im fine with a juco but a grad transfer wouild be a senior and another person we will have to replace nex year when we will already have to replace grabau, Nance, Cooke, and Hankerson and sellers. Add in another grad transfer and that would be 6 players to replace in one year.

Oh i guess not Hankerson since he is gonna walk on but still 5 new players is a lot to replace in one year. Need to get the classes evened out.

The kid from Gainesville is intriguing. You've got to figure that Coach Shy has some good recruiting connections down there from his time with Billy Donovan.

I like the length on both of these guys, but I'm guessing that neither of them are going to be immediate contributors. I sure hope that the staff has their eye on a JUCO/5th year transfer along with these two players.

Both of those guys are class of 14 though, so both would be eligible to play next year. I love Shyatts approach. He wants to build from the ground up and develop his own players. You have to give him credit for sticking with his guns and maintaining this approach.

I love Papa Diatta's tape. He looks like a stretch four that can shoot from the free throw line. Sign me up for this guy.

Pape is playing like a guard in that video. I've seen him listed as a 6'7" 189 pound shooting guard on ESPN and Verbal Commits. 247 has him listed as a 6'7" 205 pound power forward and Maxpreps has him listed as a 6'7" 195 pound forward. He looks like a small forward to me, but that video is a very small sample to make a judgement.

Diatta would be an absolute steal. He is a very versatile player with the athleticism to play on the wing. His body type doesn't suggest he will put a lot of bulk on, so I project him as 2 or 3 in the college game. He is an excellent ball handler for his size and would be a huge help on the boards from the wing position.

This would be an impressive get for Shyatt.

Pape Diatte looks really good on tape. Makes you wonder why he isn't getting a ton of attention from big schools. When do players not already signed, have to sign by?

With an international player like that who reclassifies and then sees recruiting information go quiet I usually think there is a potential eligibility issue, either academic or otherwise (possibly played in events that could impact NCAA eligibility, etc.).

Not saying that is the case here, but could be.

It looks like the Wyoming offer goes back as far as May 2013, so not sure we are still recruiting him.
