Mediocrity

Okay, well consider this.

If, and that's an enormous IF, we win the last two games and head to a bowl game, then Dave Christensen returns next season.

I for one, do not want that.

However, to even mention Wyoming and a 'bowl' scenario in the same sentence based upon what we have seen is beyond ludicrous.

The defense AND offense have significantly regressed throughout the season, the football program is in tatters with morale as low as it has ever been in the last 10 years, the school President was just canned/resigned, gloom and doom have descended upon Laramie...and someone continues to mention the word; 'bowl'?

Come back to the reality that planet earth should provide.

"Morale as low as it has ever been in the last 10 years" coming from the guy who has only been around 2 years. Ever consider that critics like you are contributing to the low morale?

Win, lose or draw makes no difference. The new interim president has said no more firings. DC will be here next year unless he resigns. We may as well make the best of it.

I do not want Wyoming to turn into the Duke of the west. Great basketball but shitty football!!!!!!!!

You might not, but everyone else would be so happy with that, it wouldn't even be funny.

Duke who just beat #23 Miami to take the lead in their division? That Duke? I'd take that.

I bet there are lots of fans who would trade having a weak football program for an elite basketball program. It beats already having a weak football program and a mediocre basketball program. Right now the life of a Wyoming fan includes false hope at the beginning of the year ending with disappointment. I'm pretty sure everyone minus Wyokie would love the life of a Kansas fan.....bad football, followed by the craziness of basketball season.
Exactly my thoughts J-Rod

The willingness to compromise either program for a "better chance" at excellence in the other is manifest of the "good 'nuff" mentality pervading this school. If you're unwilling to accept nothing but excellence in both sports, please find another team to "back".

Always come on here to cause problems. The fact is there is really no school across the country that has excellence in both sports, they are usually good at one or the other in the revenue sports. Alabama sucks at basketball, and Kansas, Duke, and anyone else you think of as a basketball power sucks at football. I would rather be excellent in one sport than be below mediocre in both of them.

The only schools that are elite in both sports are Texas and Florida...and even those two are debatable.
IMO, Ohio St. more qualified to claim dual-elite status than those two. Texas has been shit in basketball since Durant left.

Good catch. Michigan State could be up there as well.

Oregon has a good hoops program now too.

Michigan, UCLA, Stanford, Tennessee, and Arkansas are all teams with solid traditions in both sports as well. Washington Basketball has been making some noise lately, same with USC. Arizona is competitive in both as well. We also need look no further than BYU*, SDSU, BSU, and even UNR as fielding good competitive teams across both sports in recent years.

Are you talking about "kinda good in both" or elite in both? Because Tennessee is not elite. Stanford hoops? Not elite. UCLA hoops and football? Umm? They are "pretty good" in football, and not close to elite in hoops right now. Michigan is a good b-ball school, but they are a total joke in football. Easily the most overrated program of this century in football.
Arizona is competitive yes but they are only elite in basketball.
BYU, Nevada, SDSU, and Boise are not elite in both sports. Boise is elite in football, and it would be a stretch calling SDSU elite in hoops.

Duke hasn't won the ACC in football since 1989, a year after our last title in football.

Isn't that the point? We both have bad football programs so we might as well try to become superior in basketball.

+1 on basketball as well, it is much easier to build a basketball power in this day and age than for us to build a football one. Not by any means suggesting that we abandon football, but just that we try to send more support towards our basketball squads.
Wyokie will find you....and he will rid you of anything you ever cared about.

FOOTBALL ipays the bills, not basketball...you jackasses!!!!

I do not want Wyoming to turn into the Duke of the west. Great basketball but shitty football!!!!!!!!

NO WAY! When Sternberg got canned, any hope for the future went out the fucking window!!!!!!!!!!

Safe bet members of the BOT have ties to the fucking basterds from Provo!!!!!!!!!! :tickedoff: :tickedoff:

Football pays the bills when you can avg 25k or more. Let's just say or football season avgd 22,000 each year, that 132k fans and ticket sales.
Basketball is on the up and up with Shyatt, I think within a year or two we will be playing for conference championships again. The last time that happened (Bailey years) we were avging 8-9,000 a game. If we get back to that and we have 16 home games, that's 144k fans and ticket sales. Pretty even in our program.

Now I we were OU and avged 80k a game for football and only 10k a game for basketball, then I'd agree that football pays the bills.

If football pays the bills, and we aren't paying the bills with it, we need to look somewhere else.
Thank god for Shyatt.

Shit we had less than 5,000 fans at the bball game yesterday
Might be a better turnout than for the Hawaii game and unfortunately don't see a lot more as the season wears on unless they make noise int the conference........the AA was starting to fill up last year until the Buckhorn played into the program......then the seats were empty again because we were fringe competitive with Martinez and not even close without him.....we did beat UNR three times! Football pays the bills!

There are over 300 division 1 BB schools and only about 125 D1 football schools. Basketball has some unique factors that allow a school to be competitive at least briefly. Can a school be competitive in football with a fan and student base as small as ours? It's become apparent that our talent level is not very good. Is it impossible to recruit to Laramie?

What bothers me about DC is what has happened to Bret Smith. I thought he played really poorly when the game was still in doubt. The high throws (the int) and the fumble just removed any chance we might have had. No one has defended Smith more than I, but his play has not been as good as early in the year. Shouldn't the qb coach and the head coach be responsible for his development, or lack thereof?

Wyo can be competitive in hoops because you only need to recruit 12 players, 8 or so that can give you quality minutes, and 2-3 that are really good. It doesn't matter if they are all guards, or all bigs, or any combo of the 2.
Football, you need to recruit 60+, about 40 that can give you quality minutes, and 5-10 that are really good. But they can't be all the same position like in hoops.
You need 1-2 really good QBs. 1-3 really good RBs. And you need about 8 big, 6'3+, 300lbs+ people for the o-line, and similar numbers for the defense.
I guess what I am getting at is that there are more pieces to fit in the puzzle for a good football team.
Basketball, like I said, you can do with any combo of size and speed.
Fewer recruits means it's easier to get the team full.

Let's say Shyatt and DC both go and recruit 5 kids to Laramie that they think will be awesome and can rely on for the next 4 years. Well for Shyatt, that is a HUGE class. And for DC, that is a very small number of kids that are going to be good contributors.

It is just flat out easier to get a solid team built if there are fewer members of the team.
The 4 piece puzzle is a hell of a lot easier than the 100 piece puzzle.

You must be naive if you believe that. I can guaranty you that DC will not be back next year. When the interim president said no more firings he was talking about the academic side of things. He wasn't speaking of anything athletically.
