Former Wyoming track and field athlete (and All-American) Mason Finley is headed to the Olympics in discus. Won the Olympic trials today in Oregon.

I lost interest when I noticed he was wearing a U of Kansas shirt. That was kinda pissin on UW.

Agree.

To each their own, but come on Mason...that is super-poor form man.

Finley spent three years at Kansas before transferring to Wyoming, where he was named the Mountain West Male Outdoor Athlete of the Year. Now a volunteer assistant with the Jayhawks, the 11-time All-American wore a Kansas shirt while competing in Oregon.

But he still has a special place in his heart for the Cowboy State.

“Wyoming was amazing,” he said. “I learned a lot about recovery and stuff in the weight room. I think what (throws coach Paul) Barrett did for me was provide an environment where I could be stress free, happily training, basically, in a college situation.”

Haha it's kind of like when everyone goes off on an in state kid going elsewhere. We need to be more patient. The best wrestler we have left then came back home. The verdict is still out on hunter as well. Most kids want to get out of Wyoming as soon as possible after school. They want to see what's out there in the world. Most of us that grew up in Wyo were the same way. Most of you don't even live in Wyoming anymore. That's why I never really cared about having in state kids or not. If you commit to Wyoming you're a Wyoming kid in my book. Good luck to Mason and David in Rio....and Mitch's wife...I'm not going to judge a kid a t shirt he wore.

Agreed. But something I didn't realize before is that he is a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Kansas (per JVK's post).

This makes the most sense of why he was wearing a Kansas jersey. As a coach (even a volunteer one), you had better not be wearing the jersey of another school that isn't the one you work for, that would be one way to find yourself no longer a coach. So even if he wanted to rep a UW jersey at the Trials, that would not have been very smart on his part.

Yep - definitely shed some light on the picture / Kansass situation. It would have been very cool if the Wyoming media would have put a picture of him in UW gear (with the article), instead of following suit with the AP picture of him in a Kansass shirt.

Finley finished today's discus competition in 11th place with a best throw of 62.05 meters. Christoph Harting of Germany wins the gold with a throw of 68.37 meters. 2nd - 67.55m 3rd - 67.05m.

Note of interest, the world record in discus is 74.08m and has stood for 30 years!
