Marcus Bailey Argument

Okay I got sick of all the arguing about Marcus Bailey, remembered him and I are "facebook friends" ever since the "Marcus Bailey for Head Coach" facebook group after firing Schroyer.
I messaged him and told him I had a recruiting question about how it all went down and this is what he sent back.

Always glad to help out on a sports argument! It sounds like you are the closest to what actually happened.
Shyatt was coach during my junior year in high school so I never had any contact with him. He did bring in a lot of my teammates though (Josh Davis, Chris McMillan, Ugo and Uche, LeDarion Jones).
My senior year in high school was McClain's first year. And you're right, the only official offer I had throughout that season was from Colorado School of Mines. (I later found out my HS coach had contacted several schools for me but they all said I was not good enough to play at the next level, including BYU. Hahaha!) Anyway, Wyoming had one scholarship left at the end of that season and had a verbal commitment from a pretty big recruit out of Chicago. I think his name was Paul McPherson. But at the last minute, he backed out and ended up going to DePaul. So basically, McClain had one scholarship to fill at the final hour and had been getting a ton of pressure from Wyoming fans to sign at least one local kid. So he called me one day in April of that year (1999) and had my Dad and I meet him in his office. He offered me that final scholarship then and there. So I never walked on. It was an official scholarship offer... kind of. He was basically forced to "take me on." I later found this all out from my teammates. At the time of the signing, they all thought I was a joke and didn't think I deserved to be on the team. But I won them over pretty quick!
Probably more detail than you wanted but that should clear things up.
Take care,
Marcus

That was maybe the most retarded event in UW sports this century.

Thanks for digging that up...I just vomited in my mouth.

Lol that was incredibly dumb. I don't know who started that, or who thought he was a realistic candidate. He has never had any coaching experience yet people thought he should be a D1 HEAD COACH. WTF?

Interesting story and glad that he ended up at UW. As for him coaching I don't think he could have been any worse than Schroyer. We know he is smart as he was just accepted to medical school.

It's interesting to note that McClain missed out on the Evanston kid who went to Utah State and both he and
Shyatt both missed (almost) on Bailey.

I think it is easier for coaches to just suppose Wyoming has no talent rather than risk a bad recruitment.

If the coaches can overlook such great talent that sits right under their noses, makes you wonder how many really
good players go elswhere or just stop playing altogether.

Those two players were so ridiculously obvious great players.

After Bailey sent me that message we chatted for a minute and he said that Carrol (the evanston kid who went to USU) wanted to be a Cowboy but the coaches wanted him to walk on.

And we recruited James Johnson but after Johnson went a big camp and performed amazing, he got the attention of the big programs and from that point on, there was no chance of us getting Johnson.

On a side note, Bailey said that, even if BYU offered him there would be no way that he would ever go to BYU.
That is awesome.

Also, in that book "Cowboy Up", the book about Wyoming Cowboy Hoops history, Bailey was a projected mid first round pick, in the same class that LeBron and Carmello went. Obviously before the knee injury.
How cool would it be if the Big 3 was LeBron Bosh and Bailey? Or Bailey, Wade, Bosh? Or whatever combo...you get my drift.

It can be argued that Marcus' injury also had a profound impact on McClain's career at UW. Who knows what would have happened if Marcus would have stayed healthy.
