Looks like we got a rebounder

From Gags blog.

Wyoming reportedly has received a verbal commitment from 6-9 forward Brian Gibson from Delgado Community College in New Orleans.

Gibson leads the junior-college ranks in rebounding with 14.6 in 21 games.

Gibson would be the third verbal commitment UW has received, joining Western Nebraska Community College shooting guard Francisco Cruz (6-4) and Escondido, Calif., high school guard Joe Hudson (6-1).

If Gibson joins UW next season, he would join senior-to-be Djibrial Thiam (6-10), juniors-to-be Adam Waddell (6-10) and Boubacar Sylla (7-2) and sophomore to be Amath M’Baye (6-9) as as post players.

I know that I am probably in the minority (but no less a fan), but being in the position that our program is in I am having a real hard time finding any excitement about new signings. Watching that N Mex/Byu game a little, it was so depressing watching how far behind we are. The huge crowds, the talent on the court, the talent of coaches....etc. just very disappointing knowing that it could be this way for quite a while.

I know that we have fans that are trying to be very optomistic and positive. I try to look at the glass as half full but it is tough to see, especially in our conference.

Key losses in our conference next year:

*BYU - (3) Tavernari (10.4/ppg) Miles (5.1/ppg) Haws (mission but will be back)
CSU - (4) Bocar (highest ppg loss and he avgs 2.1 ppg)
*NM - (1) Martinez (13.9/ppg)
*SDSU - (1) Davis (6.7/ppg)
*UNLV - (2) Santee (4.5/ppg) Jones (1.7/ppg)
Utah - (2) Drca (10.3/ppg) Tillie (7.2/ppg)

The 4 teams that very well might get into the dance this year, lose a total of 3 kids that avg over 10 ppg and lose a total of 7 kids in all. (and just like us are adding some good talent to their teams!) I am just having a very hard time trying to find the bright spot in this whole thing! I am glad for the MWC that it is getting stronger by the minute but sad for us because I think that we are really far behind. Sorry for the depression but that is how I see it.

It could be worse! Schroyer could have signed another slasher type with no other talent than driving to the rim and getting fouled. I have a little hope in the fact that schroyer addressed our team's needs. We needed some outside game and we possibly got two. We needed someone to help on the boards, getting the leader in Juco rebounding ain't half bad. I'm by no means saying things are fixed, but maybe he finds a real gem with the last scholarship. It won't be too hard beat this season. Schroyer might just make us a little bit better......at least, enough not to get fired.

Exactly, we are addressing key needs and with quality (at least on paper) players. We also need to remember we beat SDSU and almost beat New Mexico when Afam was healthy. In his absence Desmar has emerged as a bonafide star. And, best of all, we only lose Dermody for next year and Thiam the year after. The core of this team will be together for a few more years.

And if we aren't competitive next year, Heath will be gone.

Great part is the JUCO from New Orleans won't even be 26 until next January.
Sobering thought is that neither of the JUCOs has anywhere close to stats of Manzano.

Manazano was a decent scorer, but I think you'll find Cruz scores more and shoots much better. He was also the MVP of his region as a freshman. Gipson currently leads all JUCO in rebounds.

This site is pretty good and you can compare year to year. Check out this years scoring leaders, 3pt shooting %, and rebounding.

Manzano was a very good player. The main problem, as has been pointed out, is that the staff recruited way too many players of the same type. Jackson, Davis, Manzano, etc. are all slashing guards with little to no outside shot (I am seeing progress from Desmar on this though).

We ended up with way too many wings whose primary skill was attacking the basket. We have/had no perimeter threat to stretch the defense and we are woefully undermanned at the one and in the post (two most imporant places). The failure to recruit a competent PG (I thought Desmar could have a shot at PG, but I think he is best suited at the two) and a post player to compliment Waddell is what did this team in (that and the fact that they look completely unorganized on the floor).

This has to be one of the worst coaching efforts I have ever seen. Total incompetence all around.

Even with these additions I don't think we have enough firepower. Maybe Cruz and Hudson could provide a perimeter threat off the bench, but we still don't have a post scorer or a PG. Next year is only going to be more of the same. It's a shame too, because Desmar Jackson is a rare talent. Surround him with the right players and things could really take off.
