I was not surprised how this game progressed. Before the season started, this was the game that worried me the most for one reason...Dick Tomey. He knows how to scheme and he knows how to get the most out of players, especially in front of the home crowd.
Biggest factor all night? The weather. UH football depends on timing, which depend on "speed cuts." Normally in an offense WR's cut differently than Hawaii. The speed cut is a continous, fast, round motion rather than the traditional plant the foot and cut. On a wet, soft field, your timing disappears. Also the rain is not the worst factor, it is the slim (mud and moisture), that makes it difficult to catch the ball. Our speed was also limited by the soft field, almost like running through sand. A soft field always favors the defense with one exception, a defensive back who has to stop his backpaddle and cut forward. If he does not take short steps he will fall and this happened several times. The pattern of choice on a wet field is the comeback.
Their defense had a perfect game plan for a wet field. That being said, if it were a dry field I honestly don't think the game would have been in doubt. Easily add two to three touchdowns to the Warriors side without much addition to the Spartan side.
Disappointed in the kicking game. If we give up kicking game touchdowns to Boise or lose the kicking game it will be a long night. Even though Dan missed the field goal, there was a bright spot. The ball could have made it from 60 yards! I think we have to trust Daniel more on 4th and short from 35 to 45 yards. Three points are three points and there is no overtime.
Biggest play of the game? Having the guts to go back to CJ Hawthorne two plays in a row for the touchdown. Thank you June!
More later, but congrats to a team that finds a way to win, that believes!
