I met his dad tailgating last year. He was a very nice guy who has great confidence and pride in his son. If Brett is out - and if his health and safety seem to require it - I will be in the stands on Saturday cheering for this young man and my Pokes. We talk a lot about what the team has to do - well we have a part too. I have certainly stewed for too long over the cheap-shot artists from Toledo - and the refs that appear to have served on the booster club board there.

And for those that are doubting our coaching, remember Texas and our terrible special teams play? How did they look this last game? Pretty darn good.

Time to turn this season around.

Give 'em hell WYO.

WOW! The national statistics (in the mentioned article) prove that the Poke defense is as bad as it looks.

So...any of you on campus hearing any rumors? Is Smith for sure not playing this weekend? What about @Idaho?

I would hope that Smith isn't playing this weekend. Better safe than sorry. If we can't get past an FCS school without him we've got some major problems.

I haven't heard any answer on if he's playing or not, but after what I saw on Saturday and what I know about NCAA return-to-play protocols...he's not playing.

The only thing the NCAA says is as long as he is cleared by doctors, like real MD's, not just trainers on the team, he can play.

The only reason he couldnt play the rest of the game against toledo was that if you get knocked out (lose consciencous) in a game, you can not return.

And obviously as bad as brett's hit was, we all knew he wasn't returning anyways, even if that rule didn't exist

plus if Brett can't go, this can only do positives for our team and take just a bit of the pressure on Brett. See if we come together as a team, we know that we won't have to worry as much if he gets knocked out during conference season. It's been a roller coaster of emotions, coming off a satisfactory showing against Texas, and a (personal) viewing that I never had a good feeling about all day long. There was something about Toledo that had me on edge anyway?? I hope we fire on all cylinders this weekend and kick the Mustangs all over the field, after all we're Cowboys and we need to wrangle these Mustangs and show em whos boss!! GO POKES

Somehow, I have the uneasy feeling that Smith is not in as good condition as the coaches are reporting. I would expect to see Kirk starting at least the next two games. Just a gut feeling. No evidence. No rational. Just a feeling. I hope I am wrong.

From what I have been told Smith will not play this week. If that is going to change this news must really really kept close to the chest.

1- I am okay with Smith sitting out the next few games. If we can't beat Cal Poly and Idaho with Kirkegaard, then we are prob the worst team in the nation. Perfect games for Kirkegaard to be given a shot.

2- We have to learn to play as a TEAM. Currently we are the Wyoming Brett Smiths. He IS the team. The next few weeks may give our RBs a real chance to get some carries and work out issues.

3- If Smith is healthy, why not keep it on the DL until game day. Force Cal Poly to game plan for two QBs. Albeit, not much film and what not on Kirkegaard, but i wouldnt say a thing.

Last- Who "is" Kirkegaard? I don't know much about him. Arm, running ability, etc.

Offensively, Kirky can beat the next two opponents. He will need help from the defense (especialy running) this Saturday. Against the Spud Chuckers, not so much of a problem. That's just my observation.

I can tell you that if Smith doesn't play against Idaho and our defense keeps playing the way it has been that Idaho has a good shot to beat us. Idaho got their starting QB (Dominique Blackman) back last week against Bowling Green and I watched that game and he is very good. He can run and throws very accurately. They moved the ball up and down the field on Bowling Green just had a couple of bad breaks or they could have won. Blackman finished the game 30-37 for 352 yds passing 1 TD 1 int. Plus it's a road game in the Kibbie Dome.

If our defense doesn't get better (Blackman) will shred them. So that means Wyoming will have to outscore Idaho and if Brett isn't playing I'm not so sure that will happen. If Kirk is starting I hope he is up to the challenge because we will need him to be next week for sure if not this week.

I have been told Thompson is the best QB on the team but has just taken longer to learn the offense. Arm is much stronger. Plus from a dept standpoint it would be tough to give him the start over Brett from the marketing point of view.

Check out espn's bottom 10 and then tell me with a strait face that Idaho is going to beat us :)

The bottom 10 says this about Idaho

"The Vandals would be forgiven for covering their eyes while watching tape of LSU's utter domination of Washington. They can only hope the Tigers sleepwalk through Saturday's game. Idaho heads to Baton Rouge having mustered just 6 rushing yards in a 21-13 loss to Bowling Green."

We need to be careful or we can find ourselves on that bottom 10 list, Defense really needs to step up this weekend and prove it's better than it is showing to be. At this point I would be highly concerned about any team we play if the defense can't get them off the field we will be in trouble.

2 things though.

1. Wyoming @ UNM in 2009. Lost 34-31 to an UNM team coached by Mike Locksley.
2. Wyoming @ UNLV in 2009. Lost in a blowout to 1st year HC Hauk.

We gave UNM their only win that year and UNLV one of 2 wins. And we barely held on to beat the last few FCS opponents because our defense couldn't stop them at all. Will Cal-Poly or Idaho beat us? I hope not, but our defense HAS to step it up considerably in order to win. They've been made into swiss cheese by a nearly one dimensional Texas offense (who's QB can only seem to throw short balls) and only rushed 3 guys the majority of the time against Toledo, so without pressure, Toledo's QB is going to sit and wait for someone to get open or take off for some yards himself, which is EXACTLY what happened. So I'll hold my breath until I see how well they do against Cal Poly (will be at the game) before I say we WILL win, because we have lost to some HORRIBLE teams in very recent memory.

back away from the ledge cowboy fans :) We played two very good offensive teams this last two weeks and one bounce our way here or there and we win last week. Idaho is going to be beaten like they have never been beaten before the week they play us. Confidence will be at an all time low. I predict cowboys by at least 28 points in that game.
