Kicking Game

Special teams might be another problem this year....particularly the kicking game.

Thoughts? It sounds as if the kickers have good legs just struggle with accuracy. With a young and thin defense, missed field goals are going to have more of an impact than normal.

Is Bohl using scholarships on kickers and punters?
No. I believe that our starting punter has one because his parents died in a plane crash before his sophomore year, but I know that all of our kickers are walk-ons.

Special teams are my biggest concern.

They are called special in Wyoming for a reason.

Kind of frustrating...seems this has been the trend since Dickface took over in 2009.

Intersting. I thought he had learned his lesson at NDSU that a bad kicking game can cost you big time. He tried to do it with walk ins for a while and it blew up in his face multiple times. Then he scholarshiped some very good ones that were a huge part of the turn around that landed him this job.

So many holes in WYO that he probably doesn't have the luxury to schollie a kicker. In other words, we are at the point that a lot of other units will lose a game for us rather than kicker. Have to address those first.

How is our punter? With a young and thin D, I would think we need to force as long a field as possible. Can't do that with a poor punting unit.

Wood is pretty good at what he does. He struggled with rugby punting under Christensen, but after he went to a normal punt last year he was booming them. Punt coverage, on the other hand, left a lot to be desired last year.

Agree with WYO, Wood is solid. He averaged about 41 yds/punt last year. The best punter in the nation was around 47-48 yds/punt, so Wood wasn't too shabby.

Punting isn't the issue, it's kicking a touch back that killed us last year. That and special teams not making tackles.

We shouldn't even be looking at anyone who isn't coming from a sea-level high school. Recruit kickers from sea level, and keep them there, training, up until the final week of fall camp. We'll have a kicking unit that will make returns on our field a rarity...

This isn't true. He offered a Scholly to that 3 star K from Texas, who originally committed but later de committed to stay close to home at Incarnate Word.
Now I do think he thinks he has bigger holes to fill, so I'm sure that's why we didn't see him go off and try to scrap up another kicker. But he has looked at and offered to Kickers.

Thanks for the update on the punt team. Hopefully speed and athleticism will lead to improved coverage.

Good point about the kid from TX. I didn't know that Bohl had extended a fully scholarship offer to him, but, yeah, definitely better to scrap together other positions rather than kicker.

With the style of offense Bohl runs field goals will be at a premium. Our offense is designed to get into scoring position, not just score touchdowns. We have to get points when we can take them.

We did seem to lack touchbacks last year. And while on the subject I remember when we had a rugby styled punter not that long ago. I thought that was really effective. Lack of hangtime but always got good bounces

Rugby punting is way too risky, IMO. Unless he's two-footed, the defense knows which side he's running to every time so they can stack the box on one side. And sure bounces are great sometimes, but if the returner is quick enough to get under the ball before it bounces he'll have 20 yards of open space in front of him because the ball got there so quickly. My philosophy is to sky them high and let that wyoming wind do all the work.

Speaking of wind, where the new Laramie High School is being built, you might witness a 60 yard FG in the JV game and then a punt sail backwards over the punters head depending on which direction they're facing lol
