Keys to the Game

That being said, even if they are slow, there still has to be a way to better use them in coverage rather than just sitting them off 10 yards.

Keep them up and bump receivers at the line and play a zone more towards the flat, letting safeties take care of over the top stuff. Just do this every now and then...something to mix up our coverages a little bit.

It has been the "mission" of all things UW defense to not allow "the big play" for years. Hence the 10 - 15 yard gaps...the thinking that by doing so, nobody will get behind the coverage. Not sure it matters though, when the opponent catches the ball 10 yards downfield, and gets 20 YAC.

And I agree bump & run would be a nice change to see, but you have to have 2 safety's that are complete bad asses...and we don't. Gary is a freshman (and it shows at times) and Prosinski has gotten burned more times this year than a pyro at a firestarters convention.

Agree we just don't have the secondary personnel to try anything new or elaborate. But mix it up A LITTLE bit. Even just using a bump/flat zone once every 8 snaps would be a change and throw something new at an offense.

Prosinski is a bad ass, when it comes to run stopping! Agreed he isn't an outstanding cover safety. I think Gary has lots of upside that will show over the next couple of years. I understand the bend but don't break defense and it seems to work early in the season but over an entire 12 games our defense can't maintain that level, thus the later half of the season has been abysmal of late. To be honest both the Gipson boys should be athletic enough to play bump and run coverage, and if they aren't then they really shouldn't be playing D1 CB. I would love to see us press the issue a little more on defense, but there is no reason to blitz if we are going to play 10 yards of the receiver at the snap of the ball. It gives the QB plenty of dump off options which can lead to big plays since we blitzed and left gaps in the secondary. But thats just my opinion and there is more than one way to win a football game hopefully we find one on Saturday!

Go Pokes!

The biggest key to the game is scoring more points than they do.

No wonder we have been inconsitent...maybe someone should call DC up and tell him that all we have to do is score more points than the other team and we will win.

We may want to specify that it's points IN the football game that you get from touchdowns and field goals (and safeties and PATs). Winning the coin toss 1-0 really isn't the points we're talking about, even though I commend Cowboys on the effort there as well.
