I went through and looked over his stats and was comparing them to other guys in the state of California and also nationally. I also compared them to players at every position and then to other players that only played his listed position which is Center/Forward. He will obviously play forward at Wyoming but this is what I found.

He has played 7 games

Scoring 29.1 ppg. Which is 8th in the state of California for All positions. It is 1st in California for his position. He is 73rd in the country for all positions and 6th in the whole country at his position.

Also a side note is that some of the guys listed above him have only played 1 or 2 games so their stats are scewed or he may be higher.

Rebounding:
19.0 rpg. Which ranks 1st in the state of California for All positions and his position obviously. It is tied for 5th in the country for All positions and his position.

Blocks:
6.6 BPG Which ranks 6th in the state of California for All positions and 6th for his position. It is tied for 13th in the whole country for All positions and his position.

Steals:
4.6 SPG Which ranks 42nd in the state of Califoria for All positions. 4th in the state of California for his position. It is ranked 44th in the whole country for everyone at his position.

Assists:
5.4 APG Which ranks 52nd in the state of California for All positions. 3rd for everyone at his position. He rankes 20th in the whole country for everyone at his position.

Now if you go through and look at some of the other top performers in each of these different categories most are all lacking at other stats except for the one they are ranked high at. Some have a couple of good stats but nothing like Keonta does.

So how in the hell is this guy not rated higher? I know some of the other teams he plays against have some talent on them and I also know they aren't always the toughest teams either but he is playing against some teams that have other division one athletes and the way this guy fills up the stat sheet is incredible. You would think he would have to atleast be a 4 star but he is totally under the radar and Wyoming lucked out getting this kid. Not sure why he didn't get more publicity.
 
This kid is not getting much love because of 2 reasons:
1) He is undersized.
2) His measurables aren't eye-popping.

I agree though...this young man will be fun to watch play for the Pokes. He has a chance to be a very good one. If this kid were 3 inches taller, the big programs would have been all over him.
 
I have been keeping a close eye on Vernon as well and am very excited to see him live and in person next year. I remember Shyatt saying something along the lines of "He should really be getting recruited by bigger programs then he is." I actually watched a game of his on youtube from last year and he really reminds me of Lebron James......Now in no way am I saying he's going to be anywhere near the same league as Lebron but their styles are very similiar.......In the game I watched Vernon did everything from playing the post to playing the point......Both players are physically dominate at their respective levels with the ability to create their own shot or create the shots for others. They even have the same weaknesses (but by no means terrible), outside shooting and streaky free throw shooting.....I have the feeling that Vernon is the day one starter and replacement for Washington
 
watching his highlights from google. some things i observed about his game and what make him such a threat

He is a little undersized at the college level at 6'6 he is a great small foward at the high school level, and has the body to play power foward at the high school level. will be interesting to see if he grows another inch... god i hope so

but his strengths are all around the bucket. he doesn't panic in the paint we he gets it down low. you see many post players with happy feet on the post. He keeps is feet and knows when to dribble. he is an extremely good post passer. if the double team comes, he doesn't throw up a bad shot. thats were all his assists are coming from. he's very efficient with his passes.

next piece of awesomeness is his ability to use both hands to shoot. if he's on the left side of the basket he will go up with the left hand keeping his body between him and the defender. same thing with the right side of the basket.

he's a very smooth player, doesn't blow through players with speed, but has enough handles and coordination to manuever through the paint to the basket.

I like him more now that ive seen the highlights. has a ton of talent. could be a banger type shooting guard... should definetly help our rebounding when he is on the floor with our other big talents in nance and cooke.

where would hankerson fit in all this.

are they going to playing the same position?

Hankerson will start next year most likely. Honestly with Shyatt coaching Hankerson he might be the best guard we have on the team. He was one of the top guards in the country coming out of high school. Very highly touted. Like Leonard Washington didn't work out at USC , Hankerson for whatever reason didn't work out at Alabama and Wyoming is lucky we got him but thats what recruiting connections from Shyatt and Duncan can do for you.

It is just like with Derrious Gilmore.... Bob Huggins wanted him at West Virginia but he had already filled up all of his scholarships so he contacted Shyatt and Shyatt picked him up and as you can see this year he is playing up to his potential the way he runs the point and is deadly from the 3 point line. I'm loving every minute of it.
