Kenny Sailors

We lost one of the, if not the finest ambassadors for our State and University. A sad day indeed, but you know he's got a big smile on his face after today's big win over the Sheep.

Here's the New York Times obit:

As an Ironworker, I helped build The Double A back in 1980 and 1981. I had mixed feelings about a new arena, because I'd seen some amazing stuff in The Fieldhouse, going back to the very first season, when I was five years old. Anyway, Jim Brandenberg wanted to name the new arena THE EVERETT SHELTON ARENA. Needless to say, the morons in charge weren't having it. As you'll recall, Coach Shelton put together the team and the tough eastern schedule that resulted in The National Championship AND the win over The NIT champion in 1943. Mighty Georgetown and St. John's both went down at the hands of the lowly chumps from "Whyoming." It must have been quite a time in The Cowboy State! My suggestion would be to change the name of The AA to THE SHELTON-SAILORS ARENA (or vice-versa), and somehow give credit to all the great teams and players (and coaches) with banners or signs inside. It's hard to believe that The Double A is now considered "old"! In March of 1980, I was the second Ironworker on the job, and that's definitely a proud memory. 35 years and counting! The Fieldhouse was younger than that when it was replaced. Ask Danny Ainge or Frank Arnold (the BYU coach who gave us the "We Are Despicable" T-Shirts) about their memories of The Fieldhouse! So ... deluge your favorite Athletic Director with mail. And get Kevin involved. He was the batboy on my Little League team, and he too has great memories that go way back.

They did a fantastic job in writing that up. Great tribute to Mr. Sailors!!!

I agree, it should be the Kenny Sailors Arena Auditorium. Or as someone posted, Sailors-Shelton Arena Auditorium.

Kenny Sailors Arena has a nice ring to it. I wouldn't be against Shelton-Sailors, but I think that Kenny's name absolutely MUST be on that building.
