Keeton done for the year

...just announced. Chuckie Keeton is done for 2014. I'm not surprised, also not happy I was right about this.

Didn't look good at the beginning of the season, and then his knee got banged up again. Maybe he lucks out and gets another year?

He can get a medical redshirt. Scary for USU though....he'll graduate soon. Meaning Chuckie could transfer out too for that final year.

I would expect him to transfer if he is granted another year. I will wish him the best.

Unfortunately for us, he didn't look the same.

Best of luck to him, by all accounts he's a great kid. We know what it's like to have the face of your program go down.

Good player and hate to see injuries like this to anyone. Hopefully another year off will allow for full recovery.

Even a healthy Keeton would not have overcome USU's deficiencies this year. It would have helped, but USU didn't just re-load from their good year. Now we see if they can rebuild. Not many teams in the G5 ranks have been able to do that consistently.

I don't know. They didn't have any problem dominating us without Chuckie when we still had Brett Smith.

I think people are underrating them a little right now (at least in the context of the very weak MWC). They got whooped by Tennessee, but obviously that would have happened to just about anybody in the MWC the way the league is playing right now. Arkansas St is generally quite a bit better than FAU and that game was on the road.

USU won the Mountain Division last year without Chuckie (they were 5-1 I think in MWC play without him) and it's not like anyone in this division is any better (maybe CSU and AFA slightly, but the Falcons were awful last year).

I still think BSU is probably the favorite at this point, but I would probably put USU 2nd with the Border War winner 3rd.

To be fair, you could say that about the majority of the teams the last 15 years or so (teams dominating us).

I think last year's USU team was much better than this year's. Better than us? Most likely, but the point remains. They had a successful season or two. Are they on the tail end of that or do they simply reload like a Boise did all those years?

I have my doubts about reloading. I think this is the classic rise for a few good years and then slip back. Not that uncommon in the G5 ranks.

I do see some parallels between USU now and WYO in the 90's.

WYO:

95 - 6-5
96 - 10-2, Division Champs - Coach goes to Big 10
97 - 7-6
98 - 8-3
99 - 7-4
00 - vomit

USU:

2011 - 7-6
2012 - 11-2 - Coach goes to Big 10
2013 - 9-5
2014 - Looking like something in the 7-5 kind of range

Gary Andersen = Joe Tiller. Does that mean Matt Wells = Dana Dimel? Do they have pool tables in Logan?

I went to college at USU during the Brent Guy years. My hell. That was awful. Made Dimel look like Vince Lombardi.

That Nov 1 game in Laramie looks a bit better for us, but Garrettson is good as well

I think Garretson is very underrated. USU run game is so so. Losing their best defensive player in Fackrell hurt a lot. Losing Keeton is even worse.

That said, let's not forget that Garretson was 6-2 last year. Close game with Boise State. Loss by 7 to Fresno State and a bowl win over a good Northern Illinois team. The guy doesn't lack experience. Garretson could start at most MWC schools currently. He was going to transfer because of Keeton, but stuck around.

Garretson is not a Keeton type QB at all, but he does have a good arm. He got better every game last year. By the time Nov 7 comes around, he will be on things. The biggest issue for USU is their O line. Keeton had to run for his life. Garretson cant run for his life as much as Keeton.
