It is true. I can tell you when I was recruited out of high school, a lot of schools were interested in me, but very few offered me a scholarship. Most college coach's do not want to waste a scholarship on a freshman kicker and would rather you be a preferred walk on and then earn the scholly.

Kickers should be salivating to come kick at this altitude.

It's a bit more than that, but as Cornpoke says it's the last position they'll fill and will invite many kickers as walk ons and hope for the best, rather than offer scholarships out of high school. The problem is that many kickers in high school don't get many chances so it's hard to judge. Plus when many good kickers get to college they lose it. Maybe it's the fact that the goal shrinks, the tee shrinks, the time to kick shrinks and there's a whole lot more pressure. Then again the traditionally strong programs offer kickers and punters all the time out of high school.

Should be 3 to go, as we have 25 avail, right?

Wouldn't we gain a few more scholarships because of our quitters?

25 is the NCAA limit in a single year.

85 is the total limit on scholarships. Even after signing 25 we will be about 15 players short of the 85 limit (assuming a few more departures in the spring and summer). The current staff has had an extreme level of roster turnover and we are operating at nearly FCS (63) scholarship levels.

Those schollies can be given out during the fall I believe without going towards your allotment of 25, I believe this is how Aiken and Herron got schollies. :twocents:

I think Aiken and Herron got schollies because two dudes didn't make it academically. The one RB from minnesota and a JC guy. Evan Williams? and ....

Maybe another Mitch Donahue.
Maybe his son Dylan, he went to Billings West and missed his junior year so he isnt highly regarded, but he has a good build and a walk on year red shirt and he could have a good defensive end build

I think DC likes the boss from Germany kicking off! The only kicker in DI football who will kick it, blow up the wedge, and make the tackle!
