Well the rumor about Josh Smith losing his scholly was true I guess.
He posted on facebook something along the lines of "Tired of learning how cruel the world was, used to bleed Brown and Gold until they took everything I EARNED away, 3 1/2 years of my life just wasted"
That's a big bummer.

When I read Beav's post I thought the same thing as you, Lax, Wow! This kid comes in as a walk-on, does everything that's asked of him, from taking on some QB practice duties when Smith gets hurt and all of our other QBs walk away, to playing receiver, special teams, holding for the kickers, whatever was asked.

We all know that scholarships are technically only year-to-year, but to give this kid one and then pull it away, what a dick-head thing to do. He started spring not on the depth chart, worked his way onto it by the end of spring, and this is his reward. I don't like or respect Coach C and don't pretend I do, but if this is true, it makes me more ashamed to be a supporter of the program. For the team and supporters sake I hope he has something real important to do with this scholarship, maybe he needs it to offer Notre Dame's ex-starting QB to come in to back up Brett : )

I guess we can flush away this quote (below) from Coach C.

"That's exciting; you'd like to have a bunch of walk-ons that come and contribute like he's contributing," UW coach Dave Christensen said. "He's going to find himself a way to get on the football field next year for us -- somehow, some way."

This is true with most things, I think. I don't know Josh, so I can't say. But I do know that Coach C has threatened to pull or bullied players out of scholarships in the past. Sort of like buyers remorse, when you buy something, then get home, and wish you hadn't. This is scholarship remorse. I actually hope this isn't true about Josh, and only a rumor. But I can believe it because Coach C does this sort of pussy-ass stuff all the time. I'll bet very few of us on this board would have this guy as a friend. I know he's only our coach, but he even fucks that up. I just wish we'd start winning so some desperate larger school steals him from us!

Knowing and thinking are different things but since I've known Josh he has always worked his ass off.
He is a class act, and a very nice kid. He goes to class, gets good grades, he is well liked by his teammates, and gives 100% so I really doubt he fucked up to the point DC pulled his scholly. I 100% believe DC pulled it for a better player.

Goes to show you how much of a business college football has become. DC is not the only coach who would have done it. In fact I'd imagine the list of coaches who wouldn't in FBS football is non-existent.

I think Burman needs to go, but not DC.
It is the nature of the business. Maybe Joe Glenn wouldn't have pulled the scholly, but then again, Joe Glenn is now coaching FCS ball.
It's all about winning. It isn't about coaching and teaching young people, it is all about the wins and the money that comes with it.

This isn't a scandal. This sort of thing happens EVERYWHERE. It sucks, but Beaver is right. Nature of what the sport has become, not our coach. Nice guys finish last in college football. What happens if that scholarship that opened up now goes to one of UW's future all-time greats? Or worse, what happens if we kept Smith on scholarship and the guy we missed out on becomes one of someone else's all-time greats?

The higher the competition, the more cutthroat things get. That's across the board, not just sports.

There's always a choice. You can be a program with some core operational principals supported by admin, students and fans. Or you can be a program where the ends justify the means.
Our coach bares his ass in a profanity-laced tirade? He is who he is. We justify it. He can't recruit anyone but JC's? We are who we are.We make excuses for him, He breaks commitments? I hear you loud and clear. If we hire a coach from a BCS conference, we're going to get a BCS mentality (win at all cost). I'm not making excuses for anyone, it's a morally shitty thing to do.

NCAA football is about as moral as politics and organized crime. Your issue isn't with Dave Christensen, it's with the entire culture of college sports.

The article gave me something to think about that I don't have an answer for: a college can take away an academic scholarship on a student who doesn't live up to a certain GPA standard. Is there a legit comparison to an athletic scholarship of the athlete who doesn't live up to a certain athletic standard?

He was.
He simply got screwed over for a better player.

I don't know if Josh is coming back from New Hampshire this summer and I don't know if he is still on the team as a walk on again.
I know his dad lives in Laramie so Josh has always gotten instate residency, so I think that DC and his staff know they can use that as an excuse to not give him the scholly and tell him "well you can walk on again, cuz well ya know, it's cheaper for you and you already have done it."

It's bull shit all the way around.
He came from the New England area with a dream of playing college football.
He came to Laramie, and worked his ass off.
They gave him the scholly. He played some special teams, in the season, and during practice always did what was asked.
Didn't fuck up.
Then they pull his scholly.

I don't know what to make of it. So many mixed feelings. Josh garnered some attention during last spring ball and got a scholly. I was really rooting for him because he seemed dedicated. So many other players (sutton) take it for granted.

DC is here to win games, not make friends, it's things like this that really hurt a coach when he doesn't win. Win consistent and it will be overlooked. I saw a special on ESPN about this. SEC is terrible about it. They have incomin freshmen lined up, and if they are better than your sophomore, y should you waste a scholarship? Or what if the kid is not D1 material and you were dazzled by a highlight reel? If you get in honors program and you're not honors material, would you not lose scholarship? Very tough for me to decide

Maybe the SEC bastards do that to kids. I guess they can treat kids that way and they do. Kids will take that risk just to be a part of the program, and they know they can latch on somewhere else because they have options...

A reputation for yanking schollies may make DC feel like he is one of the "big dog" coaches. But DC isnt coaching in the SEC. He coaches for UW.. and this ain't right ..its not how we do things... it should NOT be part of the cowboy culture...

Not only is it not right, it isnt smart. Yanking a scholly from a dedicated player with 100 days left before your first game to create capacity to recruit (at this point, who??) is not the sign of a strategically crafted and stable program. You should know what you are doing BEFORE you offer the scholly. After that-you cowboy up..Where the hell is Burman-he should have shut this down quietly...this is not the cowboy way-its a dick move and its dumb as hell

It won't build loyalty in the locker room, it won't build commitment, but it will create fear and uncertainty. Want to lose your recruits before they get to be Jrs and Srs? Just keep this up-they will always have their eye on the exit!

and this sure as HELL won't help him in recruiting. No kid who has a choice will take a flyer on a losing program with a coach who has a reputation as an unstable asshole when a more stable option is available. Why would any kid with a choice choose a less stable option?

Glenn catches a lot of hell on here- but my money says his W/L % will be better than DC's at the end of this year. He did this right. He stuck with kids through thick and thin-and they stuck with him. When it came time to recruit, kids would commit because they liked Glenn and they trusted him..

If we're doing poorly, people will bitch about the quality of athletes we have in the program, DC's coaching acumen, and the general way in which the program is run. If we're doing well, it's going to be all sunshine and rainbows, with praise being showered down on how well the program turned a corner after a tough season. I guarantee that a few of you that are bitching about DC's crappy coaching practice in this instance will be kissing his ass in the good times.
