#4 - the scheme isn’t setting up receivers for success. Pass blocking hasn’t been great, we aren’t under center nearly enough with this personnel, we have an immobile QB, we don’t have the most accurate QB, we don’t have a QB/time that makes it beyond his first read most of the time, and all of that prevents the routes from being fully run to give the receivers the right separation.I know he's only been in his job a year and I do think that the WR corps looks better than previous years under Grant (not a high hurdle mind you) - but if Bouknight had not followed Grant and was not a distinguished alum, I wouldn't say that the 2025 WR squad has been cooking other teams. Oftentimes, at least on the radio broadcast, the announcers lament that Anderson is throwing and the WR isn't turned around. One of three things could be true - likely any or all being plausible: 1. the WRs are running poor routes; 2. the WRs are running the right routes, but not responding when Anderson is in trouble (which is often, considering our paltry line play); and/or 3. Anderson is a craptastic QB that is throwing to the wrong spot or panicking and heaving the ball hoping someone will catch it. In any event, with more time, maybe JB can get things corrected even more in the WR room, but by most accounts, they still have a lot of work to do.
But should he (or does he) care? Whether he is fired or continues coaching at Wyoming, he is cashing roughly $5 million regardless. He should be.
The receivers are kicking ass, but Anderson looks at his first read and that's it. Defenses know EXACTLY what those reads are and key on that receiver. There are other receivers that are WIDE OPEN every play. I'm not exaggerating either. Every. Single. The radio announcers (including the mild mannered Kevin) stated that fact numerous times Saturday. The receivers are kicking ass, but Anderson looks at his first read and that's it. Then it seems that the new OC has some decisions to make about the starting QB.The radio announcers (including the mild mannered Kevin) stated that fact numerous times Saturday.
I agree regarding Bouknight. It is kind of like a reliever coming in with the bases loaded and no outs. Whatever happens from here on out is not Bouknight's fault....he's trying to get us out of a jam. Maybe Wyoming needs more/different plays vs. just play calling changes (if that makes sense). We have great running backs and so few screens (at least in the first few games). And it is painfully obvious to me that our system is built for a mobile quarterback. I am not personally criticizing Anderson, but I literally have never seen someone lose yardage so quickly (and start his slide so prematurely). I don't know how to explain this, but as he is attempting to avoid a sack, he is going back and forth in these wide turns and 15 yards are lost in a moment. Nothing personal to any player, but I would be stoked to see a different QB that can run. Thanks for digging up that article. Just trying to get a feel for what his actual experience level is. Sounds like being the main offensive play caller is going to be a brand new gig for him.
It sounds like I'm in the minority here, but I don't think our offensive struggles were a Jay Johnson problem. To be completely honest, I didn't really have a problem with his play calls at all. How many Wyoming OC's have we seen ran out of town only to see absolutely no improvement in our offense? Some of them have even went on to run quite successful offenses at other schools.
I believe our problems are a Jay Sawvel problem. Until he is relieved of his duties, I don't see us getting any better. I almost feel bad for Bouknight. I would not want my first coordinator gig to be under Jay Sawvel. Just seems like he is set up to fail in this scenario.
Boy, if he doesn’t it’s worse than I thought with him……But should he (or does he) care? Whether he is fired or continues coaching at Wyoming, he is cashing roughly $5 million regardless.
The thing is - I believe there is/was a time and place to have Svoboda throw the ball. He makes sense in the backfield on a 3rd and 2 on our side of the 50. Put him in the wildcat and he should be able to easily get the 2 yards needed with his legs. If the defense stacks the box, call the fly pattern audible on the outside and have him throw a 50 yard bomb. It’s either a touchdown, incomplete or interception. All of those bad results are fine because an interception or incomplete and punt both likely end similarly in field position. If he hits it, then we have 7 points on the board.I said on Saturday that someone needed to be fired, and to Sawvel's credit he is trying midstream which is not easy. He looked so frustrated and PO'ed after the Air Force game it wasn't funny.
I was thinking that Bouknight would be the right guy for the role before I read the article and then I saw that Bouknight had been elevated into the OC position. If anyone on this present staff can get this offense in gear it is Bouknight. I am still shaking my head at the play call that had Svoboda back there to throw the ball.......unbelievable. I would doubt seriously if we ever see that play at UW again this season.
Hopefully we can get more things right this coming Saturday and the Pokes can come away with a win.
A mobile QB helps this issueNothing changes on O until they find OL that can block. Magically Braylon Jenkins has come in and solved the RT issue but Rex Johnsen continues to get owned at LT
Well, we did try 3 flea flickers in a single game last year so I wouldn't bet on it. We'd probably be better off to run this play with Scott tbhI said on Saturday that someone needed to be fired, and to Sawvel's credit he is trying midstream which is not easy. Sorry, but Svoboda should NEVER be throwing the ball again for UW unless it is an absolute necessary thing! The thing is - I believe there is/was a time and place to have Svoboda throw the ball. But putting him in at the goal line to throw the ball is and was a fireable offense.
Nvr ever nvr again. Should just trash the whole wildcatSorry, but Svoboda should NEVER be throwing the ball again for UW unless it is an absolute necessary thing!
I somewhat agree. But let's face it, the reason it exists is because the coaching staff has no faith in Anderson to make the play. This kind of creative nonsense is born out of desperation. If Anderson was in instead of Svoboda, he might have run backwards and been sacked. Or, he might have thrown another red zone int.. Now, why they don't try another qb on the depth chart is another question. Burman doesn't like to change coaches and Sawvel doesn't like to change qb's. But, at least we have monitors at the concession areas.Nvr ever nvr again. Should just trash the whole wildcat
