Jay Johnson Demoted

Wow, surprised Sawvel had it in him to make the obvious choice! This provides slight bit of encouragement to me for the rest of the season chances (except for the fact Sawvel is still the head coach).

So was JJ demoted or canned? Hopefully the latter. He was already dead weight (worse than dead weight, he was harmful to the operation) - now he is completely useless.

His contract runs through February, so the financial impact to the program is the same either way. It'll be interesting to hear if he's still with the team.

Demoted. He's staying on as an "offensive analyst".
The only thing he should be analyzing is the back of a cereal box in his bathrobe. If we have to pay him because of his contract - fine - but he shouldn't be within a hundred miles of a headset and play sheet.

I've seen it reported before that Bouknight has called offensive plays for teams before. Is this true?

I can't find anything in his limited time at Kentucky that would suggest he was anything more than a positional coach.

He did hold the title of "co-offensive coordinator" for a single year at Utah State, but that was when Matt Wells was the head coach - I would have to believe either Wells was calling the majority of plays to begin with or at least had override authority anytime he wanted.

Matt Wells called the plays in 2016 when Jovon and Luke Wells were named co-offensive coordinators.

He was passing game coordinator at Marshall prior to Wyoming. That Marshall was not very good offensively, but they also did not have a lot of talent to compete in a tough Sun Belt

Thanks for digging up that article. Just trying to get a feel for what his actual experience level is. Sounds like being the main offensive play caller is going to be a brand new gig for him.

It sounds like I'm in the minority here, but I don't think our offensive struggles were a Jay Johnson problem. To be completely honest, I didn't really have a problem with his play calls at all. How many Wyoming OC's have we seen ran out of town only to see absolutely no improvement in our offense? Some of them have even went on to run quite successful offenses at other schools.

I believe our problems are a Jay Sawvel problem. Until he is relieved of his duties, I don't see us getting any better. I almost feel bad for Bouknight. I would not want my first coordinator gig to be under Jay Sawvel. Just seems like he is set up to fail in this scenario.

I might agree if JJ didn’t have a history of not being very good elsewhere.

Agree, 💯% in your assessment on Sawful.

Giving Bouknight the opportunity cant be any worse. And I don’t think right now I can say Anderson has shown he deserves to be the starter. We can look at a lot of poor passes, but most recent was the interception at AF. That ball was so far behind the receiver, it was sad. I’m sure Sawful would say the same thing as he said about Svoboda “that he is a great player in practice”. Well that’s all great if that’s your “bar”. But they aren’t very good in games. I would think it would make some sense to let a player know that if they aren’t performing in a game, you’re going to sit and we’ll give someone else a try (Try Sims). But, that’s just me…….

Nothing changes on O until they find OL that can block. Magically Braylon Jenkins has come in and solved the RT issue but Rex Johnsen continues to get owned at LT
