Jason Thompson gone

i'm sooo frustated with this, and to go to Utah of all places, no loyalty to the program, no Cowboy Toughness anymore, I like the hire of Coach Bohl(i hope), but let's get real, maybe it time for us if this experiment with him doesn't work maybe then it's time for us to go to FCS ourselves, and focus on the D1 only in Wrestling and Basketball, and pour most of those resources into programs that truly want to try to win. I'm sorry about my rant but frustration running rampant here....aaargh

Watch what you say about dropping down to FCS. I get killed for that.

No Arguments here, I think the general opinion here is we feel decimated at the QB position. With Brett leaving and now Jason we are left with a huge void that needs to be filled. Couple that with the change in scheme and realize how it does not fit our current personal and you can summarize that we are in a tough spot. Most here are worried about the quality of team we will field next year against national powerhouses like Oregon and Mich St. Given some time to recruit I am sure Coach Bohl will fill his needs but that isn't going to happen this year. Hell, we don't even have a fullback on the roster yet that position is critical to a west coast/Pro offense. I wish Jason the best, he would be crazy to pass up the opportunity to play at the BCS level.

Agreed. I was just trying to temper some of the vitriol seemingly directed at Thompson.

I sure didn't expect his transfer, as I thought he'd welcome the chance to almost certainly QB a team (though I don't have Jason's insider's knowledge). Of course, I thought there was pretty fair chance Smith would be back, so what do I know?

I don't have a clue who is going to take snaps now...or at least who is going to do with some chance of winning.

We could easily be looking at a 3-9 season now. Wins against Montana, FAU, and New Mexico.

With where we are, I highly doubt we beat UNM in Abq. I honestly don't know if we will win a game next year. Our D is bad, we have NO ready QB. Our OLine sucks and it's supposed to support our only positive attribute, the running game.
We will be completely overhauled next year. A long winless year.

Next year will be rebuilding year no doubt but no reason to jump off the cliff. Bohl knows how to build a successful program however it may take some time. We need to be patient. Coming from Florida, UCF started Bortles a few years ago and they sucked. Now UCF upset Baylor in the Fiesta Bowl and Bortles is going to be one of the first QB's selected in the draft.

Blake Bortles isn't walking through that door between now and then. Ian Hetrick maybe. FUCK. This is the worst day I've had in quite a while.

Unless the rules on the transfer issue have changed since Joe Glen, the University has to release the players... Guys stuck around for the most part though because Glen actually instilled a sense of pride to part of the Wyoming Cowboys Football program.
Of course they can be released from their scholarship, doesn't mean they can play immediately. If they transfer to another FBS school, they must sit for a year.

Yep. Unless they are granted an NCAA hardship waiver. The NCAA hands those out like candy nowadays but probably not in this case.

Yep, DC completely decimated this program. The weak schedule masked the fact that we are every bit as awful now as in the Vic Koenning days. He not only decimated it in terms of competitive success, but he embarrassed the University on multiple levels (Howdy Doody, poaching ex-players,etc.).

Weren't there rumors a year ago or so that Thompson has contemplated leaving before?
Yeah, from all indications they had to re-recruit him last year to stay at UW. He wasn't happy and was contemplating a move then. It still stinks that he's following Coach "Nice Ethics, Man" to Utah, though.

Bohl and Vigen need to pull a rabbit out of their collective hat at the JC level, QB-wise, or 2014 really looks dicey.

At least we can still laugh at Christensen through this bluesy tune:

1. Next season our ceiling was already maybe 6 wins just due to our glaring issues all over the field and difficult schedule. Thompson leaving doesn't really move the needle for 2014. Maybe we win 4 or 5 instead of 6. Whatever.

2. That means Bohl can take the long view on a contingency plan. Maybe that means bringing in a juco, redshirting a freshman in 2014, and grooming him to be a three year starter in 2016-2019. Maybe that means throwing a frosh into the fire right away and letting him take his lumps. Either way, in the long term I don't think this really affects the health of the program.

3. Thompson is an idiot and/or highly impressionable. He already wasted his redshirt season, which only leaves him two years to play. Which might not sound that bad, but if he loses a season to injury he's really fucked. He would have to meet the criteria for and obtain the rare 6th year, and I doubt the NCAA would be all that sympathetic to a guy who transferred laterally after burning a developmental redshirt.

4. On that note, fuck Dave Christensen. Regardless of whether this was done in official compliance with NCAA tampering rules or not, it's shady as shit and a good way to make enemies in this business. And regardless of all that, it's a great example of a coach placing his own ass higher on the priority list than the kids'. And I firmly believe that coaches of non-professional athletes owe it to them to put their well-being first. I'm sure Christensen talked a big game about how Thompson is going to light it up on a bigger stage, but the bottom line is that Thompson is in the position of getting two actual years of playing time plus the change he picked up last season AT BEST thanks to Christensen's salesmanship. That's bullshit.

In short: we'll be fine, Thompson made a poor choice, Christensen is an asshole.

I will take 3-9 under Bohl than 3-9 under Christenson (or Koennig, or Dimel) any day. At least one would be expecting the coach and players to be giving it their all and putting on a decent show.

At Wyoming there isn't a lot of winning but you got to admit...... it is interesting.

We will find a quarterback and things will turn out much better than what you are thinking. There are some good Q backs out there that are salivating at coming and starting right away.

I think is there is any silver lining in this awful news, its that Bohl can now play the "start immediately" card with a QB. There has got to be at least one decently-rated QB out there who would be interesting in starting at Wyoming right away.

If he runs after DC......so what. His style of play may not have even fit with Bohl and Vigen. I would guess they go to a juco for some production until a recruited prospect is ready.

lol again? First Smith, now Thompson doesn't fit.

Everyone knew the next couple of years would be tough.....maybe they just got tougher, maybe not, time will tell. The O and D lines are still the main concern....if Bohl can upgrade those to the point where we can consistently run and stop the run we will at least be competitive in most games...a strong running game is the best friend of a weak QB. As for Thompson, he obviously wasn't committed to the University that gave him the opportunity....he deserves DC and the Utes....hope the door didn't hit him on the way out, we don't need that kind of weak stink in the facilities!

Well.......gotta look at the upside. Kick off is in a little less than 9 months.
Yep...still waiting to hear what combination of gold/brown and maroon/silver MrTitleist plans to wear.

It'll be brown and gold. My friends on the other hand, well... they'll be maroon and silver.

We hired Bohl because our entire football program was about as low as it could get and because he has proven he is damn good at building a good football program. That includes recruiting. I'm just going to put my confidence in his ability to get this UW Football program back up and competing, but I'm not going to be unreasonable in thinking it has to be in one year. If we don't give him a chance, he doesn't have a chance.
