The future of Wyoming's defensive line got a lot brighter this afternoon as James Diamanticalled the Cowboy coaches offices to offer his commitment. Diamanti is a 6-foot-4, 295-pound mountain of a man hailing from Grand Junction, Colo.
"I really like the school up there, the people, the town," Diamanti said. "I really liked it and I wanted to get this decision off my chest before I go into the season. I called Coach (Dave) Christensen this afternoon and he was pretty jacked up about it. I haven't talked to the other coaches, because they are in meetings.
"I think I pretty much subconsciously knew I wanted to go there when I took my visit," Diamanti said. "When I really made a decision I was talking to my parents and I said, this is where I really wanted to go."
Last season Diamanti accounted for 52 tackles and five sacks last season for an 11-1 Grand Junction squad that saw its season end in the state quarterfinals. In addition to the Wyoming offer, Diamanti holds scholarship offers from Northern Colorado, South Dakota and New Mexico State. He was also taking calls from Colorado State, Utah and Boise State.
The future Sports Medicine Major is one of two Colorado defensive tackles who have caught the eyes of the Wyoming coaches - the other being Colorado Springs senior Dalton Fields. Diamanti said he and Fields know each other and he is likely to try to convince his fellow Centennial Stater to make Laramie his college choice.
"I met (Fields) at the Boise Camp and he was at the CU camp," Diamanti said. "I like him. We talked about it and we want to take our officials on the same day. I can really see me playing left tackle and him playing right or something like that and us being a real force in the Mountain West."
Diamanti and the Grand Junction squad opened their mini-camp this week with plans to put on the pads for the first time next week. Diamanti said the goals of the Grand Junction squad is high - very high.
"We have that feeling that we are going to do something special we haven't done in 27 years and that is win a state championship," Diamanti said.
The Grand Junction defender said his home area is pretty full with Wyoming shirts, stickers and other logos already and he looks forward to getting some Wyoming wear of his own. Until then, his message to Wyoming fans was pretty simple - he will work hard and give everything he can to the program.
"I am the type of player who will spend my summer and winter in the weight room to get ready for the season," he said.
