A record Opening Day crowd will see the Wyoming Cowboys host the Virginia Cavaliers, fans encouraged to arrive early on Saturday.

Aug. 31, 2007

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

At 5:35 p.m. on Friday night the last ticket was sold for Saturday's home opener between the Wyoming Cowboys and Virginia Cavaliers. War Memorial Stadium will be filled to its capacity of 30,514. That will set a new opening day record for the War Memorial Stadium. The previous home opening record was 29,134 set on Sept. 14, 1985 versus Air Force.

There will be no tickets for sale on Saturday. All tickets have been sold.

This Saturday's contest between Wyoming and Virginia is one of the most anticipated games to be played in War Memorial Stadium in years. Virginia is only the second Atlantic Coast Conference team to visit Laramie. The only other ACC team to play in War Memorial Stadium was North Carolina State back on Sept. 23, 1961. Wyoming won that game by a score of 15-14.

A total of 10,000 Gameday Gold T-shirts will be handed out to the first 10,000 fans entering the stadium on Saturday. Those T-Shirts will be distributed at all gates.

The UW Athletics Department is encouraging fans to show up early for the game to help eliminate lines in the parking areas and lines entering the stadium.

I thought War Memorial had a cap of 32,500? Not 30,514. Also, I thought the Air Force opener in the article was in 1984 and not 1985.

The capacity is now 30,514. Saturdays attendance was 31,650. Over capacaty!

TI thought the cap was now 32,500 when they took out 1,000 from one of the endzones.

"The War" opened on Sept. 16, 1950, with a 61-13 win over Montana State, followed by an official dedication the following week. The stadium's original capacity was 20,000. It was expanded to 25,500 in 1970, and the seating was increased to 33,500 in 1978. Following reconstruction of the west upper seating in the summer of '04, the current capacity is now 32,580.

You may be right. If so there were some No-Shows

So what was the reasoning for pulling out the bleachers in the South endzone?

Someone on GoWyoGo explained it a few years back but I don't remember what they said.
