I do like winning, and that's why I'm not a fan of dropping to FCS, because we wouldn't win there. We would get FAR less money. We would get some in-state athletes but no one that is FBS talent. Out-of-state recruiting wouldn't be very impressive because now instead of competing with CU, CSU, AFA, USU, etc., we would compete with them AND Montana, Montana state, South Dakota, South Dakota state, North Dakota, etc. And guess what, when it's FCS Wyo vs. FCS Montana, we probably lose that recruiting battle. So if your argument is to drop so that we can win, that is faulty logic because I don't think we would win at FCS.
This...
I do not believe we will consistently win at the FCS level. Dropping down means less money, less exposure, and less fan support then we have now (any casual fans we have will drop off). We will not be able to pay coaches as much, and our recruiting will drastically drop as we will be in a lower Division. Top players will easily choose CSU, AFA, CU, USU, etc. instead of an FCS school. We also won't have the depth we have now due to the further scholarship limitations. So the advantages we currently have over FCS schools (money, exposure, coaching, recruiting, depth due to more scholarships), which lead to our good record against them will all be gone. We would then be the one of the most remote FCS schools instead of FBS schools. In my opinion FCS is not an option and should never be an option. I also agree that this would be the equivalent of Wyoming throwing up the white flag and saying, "We give up, we just can't compete at this level", and we would probably be around 5 short years from having the same conversation of dropping football completely at that point.
