First, let me say that I love my Cowboys and second, I loathe BYU.
But, I think that this is the absolute best thing for this conference! It is obvious that their school leaders, their students, their coaches and players, and most of all their fans think and truely believe that they are extremely above everyone else, (including Utah which I believe this is all about).
I do not think that this is really about the MWC. I think that the MWC is BYU's scapegoat in all of this mess. BYU is like the little child that was scorned and now are saying.. "oh yah?? watch this!!" When a conference, the pac-10, ignored BYU's plea to become a member, largely because of the religous aspect and took Utah instead, they were humilated and their ego was extremely bruised. And just like anyone that gets backed into a corner and they get embarrassed, BYU came out swinging and they took their frustrations out on the MWC, negotiating with the WAC and commenting on issues that they should have not said in public. When Thompson counterpunched with Fresno and Nevada, I do not think they were ready for that and that left them in no man's land. Poor, poor, BYU!! Woe is us!
To try and save face, and their pride, the only way that they will be able to show Utah that they are better than them is to go independent in football. Knowing that the MWC wasn't going to lay down for them and let them run the show or they weren't going to be "any better" than any other member of our conference, going independent and actually making it work is the only option to prove to Utah that they are better.
But let me say this. BYU's lack of judgement and extreme pride might actually destroy what they have spent many years in athletics, to build up. Their fans are putting as many spins on this as they can and what I can gather by reading their message boards, it sounds like they are trying to brainwash and talk themselves into this being a good thing, the only thing that could of happened because of our superiority. They fully expect not to be independent very long because they will be invited to the Big12 in the next few years and that will show Utah who is boss!! Once again, if no invitation comes along, then what? Contrary to popular belief BYU.... you are NOT followed around the country like Notre Dame is and you NEVER, NEVER, will be!! But you won't listen, just like a child won't, and that again just might be your demise. For us that are in the "horrible situation called the MWC"... we don't mind and are rooting for this to happen!
So from Wyoming, CSU, UNLV, TCU, SDSU, N MEX, Air Force, Boise St, Nevada, and Fresno St..... we lift our beer glasses (I know this is against your rules, but not ours!!) and we toast to your hopeful demise and crushing defeats in all your sports... especially in football and basketball!!!!!! and we hope that you land safely on your feet in the Big Sky Conference in 9 or 10 years!!!
