Is the BYU game the worst scheduling decision in UW history?

lol you could not create a video of cheap shots for every school like what is shown above. That is heinous , over the top, wanton poor sportsmanship and recklessness

Did you forget the "project": BYU's attempt to destroy the conference that bent over backwards for half a century to accommodate all the special rules that apply to those cultists?

BYU can eat a shi+ sandwhich.

We should never play them again in any sport.

No I did not forget that, I even referenced it. Those are all legit reasons to hate BYU...that is not the point of the thread though. I assume you hate CSU as well?

The question was asked: "Is the BYU game the worst scheduling decision in UW history?"... I'm beginning to think it is, but not for the reasons put forth by those opposed to scheduling them.

From what I can tell only LanderPoke is honest enough to come out and acknowledge that it's about his hatred for them and how he feels playing them...the rest of it is all some sort of contrived attempt to repay them for all the slights over the years. I have news for you all.... They. Don't. Care. They have won....they got into the big boy college athletic club and have left the MWC behind. If you have a desire to bring pain to BYU athletics and BYU fans....play them, and beat them. Anything else you are deluding yourself.

P.S. BYU can eat a shi+ sandwhich.

I'm starting to understand why people think you're a BYU puppet as well.

Byu didn't win anything. They aren't a part of the big boy club. There isn't a P5 anymore. There's a P2 and BYU still isn't a part of that.

Regardless, let them go play all the Big 12 leftovers they want. There's not one single benefit to playing those guys for us. Not one.

Haha....ah yes....the predictable accusation of not being a "true" Wyoming fan. I know who I am and am secure enough not to worry about not being accepted as a fan on a message board. I came here to discuss Cowboy and MWC football and by god...that's what I'll do.

Now...would BYU love to be in the SEC or BIG10...who wouldn't? Their experiment of going independent has definitely been a success though. From their standpoint...they made the right decision and are taking their rightful place at a higher level of college football than what was offered at the lowly MWC. You can poo-poo the Big12 if you want but it's a much high level of football there than the MWC both in competition and in revenue generation. Would you have the same derision for the Big12 if Wyoming was offered an invitation? I think not.

As far as your claim that "There's not one single benefit to playing those guys for us. Not one.", you may be right....but if you are, that is true for tons of teams that we end up scheduling.

I'm mostly pushing back the the subtext I'm getting on here that by scheduling them, we did them some sort of favor. If anything, from a competitive standpoint, BYU is the school with much more to lose. The only not bad outcome for them is if they blow us out .... anything else and it will be a disappointment, and a loss (please let this happen...please, please) would be catastrophic.

You are correct that I couldn't ... (but I can't create crap when it comes to videos) but have been at the War and the AA when fans have thrown crap at refs, player and chanted unspeakable things. I love all the guys that don the brown and gold but I have witnessed them get caught up in the heat of competition and go off as well.

Nobody should pull the stunts that are on that video. BYU makes their own bed here though...if you claim the moral high ground you better be prepared to live up to and they definitely do not.

Someone said it succinctly in a previous posting.

"BYU Derangement Syndrome"

The responses and the outright insane levels of vitriol by some (hate BYU or any other program you choose to) in regard to the scheduling and the playing of this game borders on unhinged X ten trillion.

Get a life!

The immaturity of some here is shockingly disturbing.

We just completed one of the most impressive wins for a very youthful football program a few days ago on national television.

We are playing national television again this Friday night against a school with long time ties to Wyoming Football and a school nobody likes. Talk about interesting? Talk about anticipation? Talk about a good showing or maybe even a win and what that would do for this program now and for recruiting potentially down the road?

The Steelers hate the Brows, Alabama hates Auburn, Texas hates Oklahoma, do you think any of those fan bases has accused the other of dirty pool at some time in the past? Is that a reason for any of those fans to insist that their team or school not play them again? Grow the fuck up.

Last week was a rivalry game, CSU is a rivalry game, and yes, BYU IS A RIVALRY game and I can't wait for kickoff because I too want to beat them badly.

Many here act like BYU fucked your sister and your mother and them took a literal pile of shit on your antique bedspread.

Maybe it's the Mormon thing? I'm sure there are Mormon's who are here and they are Wyoming fans? Personally I don't understand Mormonism and at the risk of upsetting anyone (not my intention) I feel it is antithetical to a true Christian faith. However that is no reason for me to "hate" either Mormons or BYU as a school for that matter.

Many responses have jumped the shark and you all need to reel it in a bit.

They went 4-1 at home last season and lost to Boise State.

They went 5-0 at home in 2020

They went 5-2 at home in 2019

They went 3-3 at home in 2018 losing to Northern Illinois.

They went 1-4 at home in 2017 losing to Massachusetts for heaven's sake.

They went 5-2 at home in 2016 the year we last played them in the bowl game. By the way, should we have turned down the bowl game invitation because it was against BYU?

Since 2016 they're 18-10 at home.

Now give me Wyoming's record at home during that same stretch?

Don't give me this crap we can't win this Saturday night. Maybe we do. Maybe we don't.

All I know is I want to win and beating BYU would make my Saturday night incredible if it happens.

Grow up!

I can't speak for everyone but I think pretty much everyone who is opposed to scheduling byu doesn't view it as getting back at byu. After decades of putting up with them, we were finally free of them. It's about decades of byu b.s. and simply not wanting to associate with them in any capacity. It has nothing to do with "getting back at them".

Ok...I get that. It has been some years since we've had them in conference...while I have loved it every time we have beaten them, I don't miss anything else about it.

I'm trying to make sense of this thread. Help me understand what I'm missing.

I'm aware of what went down when BYU left the conference, is this just understandable bitterness from that?

The one thing I am sympathetic to is the "fair shake" argument. Playing in Provo today isn't like it was in the '80s but my impression of their home advantage is that it's suspiciously impressive.

I'm not compelled by the cheap shot argument...if one thing has gotten better in the last 20 years it is that the incidence of legitimate "cheap" shots have been greatly diminished. Of course...any knucklehead can try to pull something stupid at any point, but in this day and age, it is not something that is coached or encouraged, even at BYU. Not every football injury is result of a cheap shot, not even close.

On the topic of the contractual obligations, how is BYU buying out the return trip any different that all the rest of the big time programs that do this to us? If buying out the return trip is not good, why even go down the road of scheduling any of those teams?

I can't shake the feeling that this is partly because the outcome is looking like a wipeout for the pokes at the hands of a historically hated program.

Finally...how many of you lurk on other programs fan boards and even masquerade as "fans"? If you do ... what is the motivation? Asking this due to the accusations that crop up from time to time (some directed at me...though it's been a while) that posters are actually not Wyoming fans.

This wasn’t in the 80’s - no, it was 7 years ago.

I’ll give you the chants from the student section, and actually understand that is the fun of being a student in a home stadium. Pretty much part of sports in general.

I do challenge you to post a link to things being thrown at officials ( not that I haven’t felt like it - the Tulsa game when 3 late hits weren’t flagged) by UW fans.

I’ll also challenge you to post a video of UW fans throwing things at opposing players.

Alright, who gave their mother directions to create an account and post here?

Save the lecture friend, nobody here needs that horseshit.

Or nut punching or sucker punching guys in the back of the head or sucker punching dudes on a basketball court. You don’t see stuff like that at schools other than BYU

Pics or it didn't happen right? If you haven't seen stuff thrown at refs at Wyoming....you have not been looking. I've seen stuff thrown at players before as well (not very common thankfully). I'm not saying it's happening all the time or that it's condoned...just that it has happened.

Maybe BYU does it more (I don't like them so I kind of hope that is true)...but you absolutely have seen it at other schools. Look.....you won't get an argument from me that BYU is a bunch of choirboys...hell they may even be worse than most, but you and I have both watched enough Wyoming sports to witness the guys we cheer for commit a cheap shot. Let's not clutch our pearls here. My favorite was Bobby Traylor slapping a BYU player in the face...definitely a cheap shot .... and no call since this was in the day before replay. That stuff goes on all the time.

*edit* Just to be clear...I'm not making a "everybody does it" observation. From this fan's biased point of view....BYU does seem "dirtier". BUT I recognize I'm biased here.

Next time I have any thoughts I'll run them by you for approval before I hit send. Cool with you?

The more I think about it the more this thing has me thinking it's got to be the Mormon thing, which is sad.

I've met some rude and unlikable Mormon's and I've met some very nice ones.

I've met some pretty shitty black folks and I've met some very nice ones.

I've met some pretty awful Christians and some very decent.

Hispanics.

Jews.

It goes right down the line.

Go Pokes!

Go Cowboys!

I think the biggest mistake in scheduling this was that it wasn't scheduled for BYU to come to Laramie first. I fully agree that I think they will buy out the second game, same as many of the other p5 schools have in the past, which is why it was good on some of the other more recent home and homes that are scheduled that we have the p5 schools scheduled to come to Laramie first (Texas Tech, Utah, Cal).

I don't know why we didn't do that with BYU. That should have been a minimum requirement for scheduling the series.

So friggin bogus.

Five current players on BYU's roster were enrolled the last time the Cowboys and Cougars met on a football field.

That was in 2016 ... And they are all listed as juniors.

Correct BUT....the first game of that home-&-home series was in 2014 in Eugene, Oregon.
