can't wait for august 31st!

being in washington state, there is zero chance for me to make the trip to cornhusker land... hopefully there is some tv or web-broadcast of the game.

anybody planning on making the trip?

there is a nebraska rivals piece on wyoming if any of you have an account to read it which i do not.

what a great opener for our new guys... should be olive's first time against nasty opposition, along with brown and krill.

I rate brett as a better qb than t. martinez, but it won't matter if we cant stop the student body left and right.

hopefully herron, ruff-e-o (ruffran), and claiborne have steller days and we get our first ever victory over nebraska (correct me if im wrong).

can't believe we have to wait four more months... jesus its gonna be a long summer.

I'm definitely making the trip to Lincoln. Worst case scenario I get to party in the tailgate lot and show the bugeaters that we can have a good time anywhere. Best case scenario I get to watch the Pokes win in Memorial Stadium and watch the fuskers cry for a week!

It was evident 2 years ago that Brett Smith is much better than Taylor Martinez.

I don't think there is any question that our WRs will show up. It is all about the defense and our ability to stop the run and force Martinez to throw. At least we don't have to watch toss sweep to Burkhead for 10 yards every play.

Nebraska is loaded on Offense and will be very difficult to stop. Say what you want about Martinez but actually he improved pretty dramatically as a passer last year. He still struggles with his decisions and throws a lot of picks but he definitely improved last year. Defensively they have quite a few holes to fill as I think they only have 2 or 3 starters coming back. They are Nebraska and have depth but they will be vulnerable defensively, especially right out of the gate. Great time to get these guys. A much more favorable test than Texas was last year but I think it could be a track meet so hopefully we can be opportunistic on defense and get a couple of turnovers and protect it on O.

They did lose burkhead and a lot of D starters. Like wyoirish said, it is a good time to face them right out of the gate.
And Nebraska D or not, Brett Smith will be able to score.
I am hoping for a high scoring game, I think that is our best chance to win

2 years ago after the game (and during it), I said Martinez is a runningback who can throw the ball. Basically a perfect fit for a triple option offense QB. He can, I give him that. As a passer though, well, even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Keys to the game for us:

Protect Smith and open up running lanes. O-line needs to dominate in the trenches if we want a chance to win. Smith is shifty enough he can usually avoid pressure, but he still needs blocks up front. O-line also needs to open up holes for the run game and get some pressure off of Smith and keep the defense honest.

Herron. Yes, we have a pretty good stable of WRs, but Herron has shown he can torch anyone and has the hands to back it up. He may be the key for the offense.

Defensive pressure. The switch to the 3-4 (an inherantly more aggressive style than the 4-3) should help with various blitz packages.

Stop the run! This may be THE key for us. Although Burkhead is gone (and that was a nightmare for us a couple years ago, 10 yards a pop), Martinez is a big threat in the run game. Keep him contained and get good pressure on him, and stuff the RBs, we should be alright.

Nebraska is not some non-AQ school. Who they lost is completely irrelevant....all they do is reload. They get an entirely different caliber of player. The talent level is overwhelming compared to UW's, especially in the trenches.

Tell that to Arkansas, and USC. Nebraska puts their jock on one leg at a time just like us. They can get their ass kicked just like anyone else on any given day if they ain't ready to play.

I feel like we heard all about how much better talent Ole Miss and Tennessee had over us.
And how much better Alabama was than Utah. And Michigan was better than Appy St.

J-Rod you have this mental block that there is no way we can even compete with Nebraska.

We might not go out and kill them or even beat them, but to think the game is over 4 months before it starts is dumb. Anything can happen, and yeah I know, it isn't a 1 man sport. But if sometimes individual games can be won by a select few players. And I think between Brett Smith and the WRs, it can happen.
And remember who cares if we give up 30, if we score 31. Good defense or not you just have to have more points at the end of the game. Style points don't matter, just actual points.

I have the mental block? Okay then. Whatever....be sure to get back to all of us in early September Beaver.....don't run away like you did after the Toledo/Cal Poly games last fall. :fuel:
